Abstinence-only prohibitionists (including Obama appointee Howard Koh) to present
tobacco Free Campuses: Promoting a Culture of Health (or more accurately Promoting a Culture of Lies and Intolerance)
Tobacco-Free Campuses: Promoting a Culture of Health: Agenda
at University of Michigan tomorrow.

I strongly suspect that ALL speakers at this event will be advocating bans on all tobacco use (including e-cigarettes) at every university and college campus in the US.

I also suspect that few (if any speakers) will mention that:
- the use of smokefree tobacco products poses no harm to others,
- smokeless tobacco and e-cigarettes are far less hazardous alternatives that have helped millions of smokers quit smoking,
- the US and many State Constitutions protect civil liberties from unwarranted intrusion by government,
- the FSPTCA and 46 states make it legal to sell tobacco products to anyone over the age of 18, and 4 states establish age 19,
- it is impossible to enforce a ban on the use of smokefree tobacco products (including e-cigarettes), or that
- any attempt to enforce a ban on the use of smokefree tobacco products is likely to violate civil liberties.

One of the presenters at this event is Ty Patterson, Executive Director of the National Center for Tobacco Policy
Home - National Center for Tobacco Policy

Mission
The National Center for Tobacco Policy (NCTP) teaches organizations how to develop, implement and sustain a tobacco free environment.
Provides assistance to organizations who are considering a tobacco free policy, are becoming tobacco free, or need ongoing support to sustain a tobacco policy.
Helps organizations assess the effectiveness of tobacco policy, and identify and address unique challenges associated with the policy.

No mention of who funds the National Center for Tobacco Policy.

The only person affiliated with this group who I know is Jim Blaine, their board chairman, a doctor in Missouri who I collaborated with more than a decade ago to increase the cigarette tax in MO (but I haven't heard from him in many years).

According to the website at
Tobacco-Free Campuses: Promoting a Culture of Health: Home

An historic event takes place in Ann Arbor on Wednesday, September 12.

Dr. Howard Koh, the Assistant Secretary for Health at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, will be present at the University of Michigan School of Public Health to announce a national initiative to eliminate tobacco use on college campuses. Dr. Koh will be joined by University of Michigan President Mary Sue Coleman and tobacco policy experts and educational leaders from the across the country.

For those who are unable to attend the event in person on the UM campus, a web-based simulcast will be available to the public, beginning live at 3:00 p.m., at the new TFCCI.org website, which will launch by Sept. 10. The webcast will be archived for later viewing on the TFCCI.org website. Visit this page for more details.

The program begins at 3:00 p.m. at the School of Public Health. Dr. Koh's announcement will be followed by a panel of experts who will discuss how this policy initiative will impact US college campuses. The event will conclude with a reception at 4:30 pm.

The September 12 kickoff also marks the official launch of the Tobacco-Free College Campus Initiative website, tfcci.org, which will carry the event live by webcast and feature resources and information to assist colleges and universities in adopting and implementing their own tobacco-free campus policies.

Guys, according to the Smoke Report, which is a Youtube-based web show promoting smoker's rights and discussing smoker's issues, the
Secretary of Health and Human Services did in fact bring up a White House-backed initiative to ban all smoking anywhere on college campuses, both public AND private universities. Other than an executive order by President Obama (which wouldn't be surprising), I can't see something so draconian like this happening.

The White House doesn't have the legal authority to ban smoking (or use of e-cigarettes or smokeless tobacco) at any public or private college campus.

That legal authority resides with school officials.

But the CDC has given out hundreds of millions of dollars in grants to, among other things, lobby school officials to ban all tobacco use (including smokeless tobacco and e-cigarettes) at college campuses.

That's the entire purpose of today's event at University of Michigan.

Clearly, someone needs to invent an e-cigarette that looks like this:

or this:
