FDA discourages use of e-cigarettes

FDA discourages use of e-cigarettes | News | GMA News Online

While they may look like a harmless alternative to the real thing, the so-called electronic cigarettes could actually be harmful and should not be used, Philippine health officials advised the public Friday.

Aside from the absence of scientific evidence to support e-cigarettes' safety and efficacy, the device can even harm youths by promoting smoking, the Philippine Food and Drug Administration warned.

"Contrary to what some marketers of the electronic cigarette imply in their advertisements, the World Health Organization (WHO) does not consider it to be a legitimate therapy for smokers trying to quit," FDA head Kenneth Go said in FDA Advisory 2013-008.

"The public is advised NOT to smoke at all and NOT to use cigarettes, cigars, or e-cigarettes," he added in the advisory dated April 10, but was posted on the FDA website Friday.

E-cigarettes are gaining popularity among many smokers, and are being sold in several stores and even overpasses and sidewalks in Metro Manila.

But Go quoted Dr. Ala Alwan, Assistant Director-General of the WHO's Noncommunicable Diseases and Mental Health Cluster, as saying the e-cigarette "is not a proven nicotine replacement therapy."

He also quoted Alwan as saying the WHO has "no scientific evidence to confirm the product's safety and efficacy," and echoed Alwan's position that e-cigarette marketers "should immediately remove from their websites and other informational materials any suggestion that WHO considers it to be a safe and effective smoking cessation aid."

In the Philippines, Go said the FDA has not registered any electronic cigarette products "and will not register them as health products."

Worse, Go said the e-cigarette runs contrary to Republic Act 9211, the tobacco Regulation Act of 2003, which protects the youth from nicotine addiction.

The law also seeks to protect youths from chronic respiratory diseases, including cancer, due to the inhalation of highly toxic substances found in tobacco and cigarettes.

"Wittingly or unwittingly, the electronic cigarette promotes smoking among children and the youth. It makes them less fearful of hazards and risks of smoking. It is opposed to the DOH health goal to stop cigarette smoking and tobacco use," Go said. — LBG, GMA News

Virgin Media Call Centre Staff could benefit drastically from using E-Mists Electronic Cigarettes, the company has recently targeted the call centres as those staff who currently smoke can reap the benefits of using the Electronic Cigarette device. This is because E-Mists Electronic Cigarettes are legal to use indoors and many more companies are allowing their staff to use the E Cigs at their work stations.

With the Electronic Cigarettes taking a huge hold on the UK market and threatening the Tobacco Industry for sales, it is no wonder that companies are cashing in on potential savings and also productivity of their workers.

Thousands of company owners dread that their staff have to take breaks to smoke Tobacco Cigarettes, this decreases productivity and allows more time for their workers to be away from their workstations. That is why thousands of companies are now allowing the E-Mists Electronic Cigarette products to be used at workers desks.

The benefits are clear, the electronic cigarettes do not emit an odorous smell so therefore it won’t affect the worker next to them. Also it is proven that electronic cigarettes contain 4,000 less chemicals per unit than tobacco cigarettes. So therefore are not cancer promoting like tobacco cigarettes, this means that more staff won’t be off for sick days and also will be able to breath clearer, making them more proactive towards their jobs.

BAT exploring e-cigarette potential | theSundaily

PETALING JAYA (April 18, 2013): British American Tobacco Plc (BAT Plc), which acquired CN Creative Ltd in December last year, is exploring the e-cigarette market as interests in e-cigarette products pick up among consumers, said British American Tobacco (Malaysia) Bhd (BAT) managing director Datuk William Toh Ah Wah.

"Globally, there are signs that people are willing to try out e-cigarettes and as a result, BAT Plc had recently acquired an e-cigarette company based in the UK (CN Creative) so that we can better understand this segment of the business," he told reporters after BAT's AGM yesterday.

"We (BAT Plc) have not launched any e-cigarette products in the market yet. We have just bought a small company to try and understand the signs, the characteristics and dynamics of e-cigarettes.

"In due course when we're ready, we will probably enter the e-cigarette market in countries where we believe there are potential for e-cigarette consumption. But in Malaysia, we have no plans at the moment," said Toh.

CN Creative is a UK based start-up company which specialises in the development and production of non-combustible cigarettes. The company has its own research and development facilities and has several e-cigarette products on the market.

British American Tobacco plc (informally BAT) is a British multinational tobacco company headquartered in London, United Kingdom. It is the world’s second-largest tobacco company by sales (after Philip Morris International).
BAT has a market-leading position in over 50 countries and operations in around 180 countries. Its four largest-selling brands are Dunhill, Lucky Strike, Kent and Pall Mall, with others including Kool, Benson & Hedges and Rothmans.

Propylene glycol, the primary ingredient in the electronic cigarette cartridge, may be a powerful deterrent against pneumonia, influenza, and other respiratory diseases when vaporized and inhaled according to a study by Dr. Oswald Hope Robertson. Decades before the e cigarette was invented, a study was conducted by Dr. Robertson of the University of Chicago's Billings Hospital in 1942 on inhalation of vaporized propylene glycol in laboratory mice. A more in-depth article was printed in the 1942 issue of TIME Magazine Medicine: Air Germicide - TIME for November 16th. "Dr. Robertson placed groups of mice in a chamber and sprayed its air first with propylene glycol, then with influenza virus. All the mice lived. Then he sprayed the chamber with virus alone. All the mice died."

The researchers also found that "the propylene glycol itself was a potent germicide. One part of glycol in 2,000,000 parts of air would--within a few seconds--kill concentrations of air-suspended pneumococci, streptococci and other bacteria numbering millions to the cubic foot."

Just remember this, the problem is not with tobacco companies, which many people think that is the case. What I say is YOU ARE MAKING A HUGE MISTAKE! E-cigs affects biochem and pharma companies the most because it would render their somewhat effective smoking cessation products useless and reduced sales of lucrative cancer treatment products.

I have explained this many many times before and governments around the world are desperately trying to protect these biochem and pharma companies.

From The Article: ... "legitimate therapy for smokers trying to quit,"

... "is not a proven nicotine replacement therapy."

... "and will not register them as health products."

It's all from legal-medical perspectives, nothing that has anything to do with reality. They are citing from laws and regulations, not factually addressing any point in respect to what Users opt to consume. Just the usual "We don't know anything, therefore you shouldn't ..." rhetorical babblefest.

WHO probably sends out canned response quoting sheets to these PR mouthpieces. Since those authorities trusted with the health of the nation do not have a mind of their own, do not think for themselves, they get told what to say just like little children.
