Kansas bill (HB 2672) would increase cigarette tax from $.79 to $2.29/pack, increase OTP tax from 10% to 78% of wholesale price; referred to House Tax Cmte

This bill, which was sponsored by the KS House Health Cmte, doesn't apply to e-cigs (yet).

It would be helpful for KS vapers to urge the KS House taxation Cmte to oppose the proposed 780% increase in OTP tax because:
- smokeless tobacco, cigars and pipe tobacco are all significantly less hazardous than cigarettes,
- smokeless tobacco, cigars and pipe tobacco use imposes negligible healthcare costs on KS taxpayers (unlike cigarettes),
- a 780% increase in OTP tax is far greater than the 190% cigarette tax increase in HB 2672, and
- HB 2672 would tax the least hazardous tobacco products at a greater rate than the most hazardous tobacco product, which would encourage cigar, smokeless and pipe tobacco users to switch to far more hazardous cigarettes.

Of course, the real reason vapors should urge KS House Tax Cmte members to oppose HB 2672' outrageous OTP tax increase is because the ANTZ will probably urge them to amend the bill to also tax e-cigs at 78% of wholesale price. But please don't mention e-cigs in your communications with KS lawmakers (as long as e-cigs aren't included in the bill).
