After we convinced Linn County (IA) Supervisors and Iowa Senators to reject Obamacare funded proposals to ban sales of dissolvable tobacco products to adults (to protect the kids), Linn County (IA) Board of Supervisors approved a second reading of proposed ordinance to ban sales of dissolvable tobacco and e-cigarettes to minors, and to require e-cig vendors to obtain a tobacco retail license.

Correction: This program is not run by Linn County. I was under the false impression that the Linn County Health Department, as a CPPW sub-grantee, had been administrating the project due to their previous connections to banning dissolvable tobacco, and the fact that someone from the Linn County Health Department was responding to posts made on the Facebook wall.

LC Public Health, which received between $1 and $2 million as a CPPW sub-grantee from the Iowa Department of Health, is currently running a Facebook campaign specifically designed to warn parents about dissolvables, snus, and e-cigarettes.

Here's a dissolvable tobacco product that is already being sold in Iowa. It boldly claims to be "the future of tobacco." If so, what must we do to protect our kids from a future of nicotine addiction, which could lead to use of all sorts of tobacco products, including cancer-causing chew and cigarettes?

Next time you see someone walking around with a toothpick in their mouth, ask yourself whether it's really a toothpick. See the brown stuff on the end of the sticks on the right? That's finely milled, dissolvable tobacco. And the ones pictured here smell an awful lot like mocha coffee! Surprised? Concerned? Share your thoughts!

Camel "Orbs" are pellets of finely milled tobacco. Notice anything about the size, shape and color?

Not long after passage of the Iowa Smokefree Air Act, electronic cigarettes began appearing in our state. This one releases nicotine-containing vapor from one end and emits a green light on the other and around the “filter.” Some have reported seeing these products in family-friendly shopping venues such as indoor mall kiosks. Where have you seen them? How about the electronic cigars that Megan mentioned yesterday?

Left a comment on the Facebook page. (Wonder how long that will last?)

Using "candy" as an adjective for a product that is intended for and used by adults, that is not marketed as candy, that is not labeled as candy, and that is not shelved with the candy--is misguided and dangerous. Parents should demand that IDPH stop this before some poor kid believes it.
