Using protected batteries is the easiest way to add short circuit protection. You can add a protection circuit to a unprotected battery but it is easier to just buy a protected battery. Other then that Polly switches or PTC re settable fuses add short circuit protection. Some folks add those on top of the battery protection to get a extra layer of safety.
I'm new to modding, so maybe some of the other members can chime in on this. IDK what batts you intend to use, but here is an 18650 holder with a built in protection circuit.
Java_Az has me curious about polyswitches & PTCs though.
What Java said, also good designing and proper use of materials in key places helps a lot in preventing shorts. A built in fuse within the mod like a heat spring that collapses when a short occurs.
