First off you'll need reputable suppliers. I prefer US-Based ones as the shipping is typically fast. China might be cheaper but you'll wait up to two weeks or more.

As far as size, battery life, and ease of use go, I'd definitely recomend eGo style batteries. I've always had the best luck with geniune Joyetech. I'd say avoid the "Twists" for now as you can easily pop some weaker carts on the max setting and this brings me to my next point. Get the USB Passthrough type batteries, they come in 650mAh and 900mAh. If you want smaller go for the 650. If an extra inch isn't a big deal, get the 900. The 900 by itself is about 4" long and will last you most of a day with most delivery systems. More often than not these batteries are not part of a kit. These USB style batteries will regulate their voltage to 3.3 for an entire charge which is very nice. They can also be charged WHILE vaping, another good plus for someone trying to quit. Can sit on a computer and read ECF while its charging and you're happily vaping.
Buy two so you will have a backup in case one breaks. Nothing worse than no battery and lots of gas stations with plenty of sickarettes.
Next up you'll need to figure based on your level of mechanical skill which type of delivery system will work the best for you.
Cartomizers + Cone- Probably the easiest to set up but will require regular refills throughout the day. Using a cone just enhances the appearance. Most websites that sell the batteries will sell the matching cones. This method will reduce the life of a cartomizer due to the inevitable dryout.
Cartomizer + Tank + Collar- (SmokTech DCT or UDCT, Boge F15/F17 Skinny)- Requires a bit more fiddling but properly set up won't need a refill for several hours. Extends the life of a cartomizer by several days to up to 2 weeks. Can Leak. Can be frustrating. Requires either Pre-Punched flanged cartomizers or a bit of tinkering with a carto-punch. 1hole for thin juice, 2holes for thicker.
Clearomizers- (Stardust, Kanger, Rebuildable, Disposable)- A very good and easy option. These devices incorporate the heating element inside the tank, less fiddling, fewer leaks. Heads last a good while. Definitely buy an extra as backup even if you do buy the rebuildable option. Avoid citrus/cinnamon/acidic flavors with these, those are known to crack the plastic tanks.
With any of the above options, assuming you took my advice about being able to vape while charging to help quit smoking, tend to buy "Low Resistance" types. Go for ~1.8-2ohms for a nice warm vape with decent clouds of vapor. On a 3.3volt Ego you'll be vaping at 5-6 watts which is pretty respecatble. Just keep in mind low resistance will make the battery die a bit faster so consider the 900mAh batteries, and I think some sites have the USB style in 1000mAh now too.
