ECF and Diacetyl.

Okay I was buying a bottle of liquid from a vendor and at the bottom read this ***This product contains a very small percentage of diacetyl. A flavor molecule is found in buttery flavors**

Then looked up diacetyl wiki and Under Safety read: The United States National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health has suggested diacetyl, when used in artificial butter flavoring (as used in many consumer foods), may be hazardous when heated and inhaled over a long period. I was ordering another bottle cause I was running low, after reading that I threw it away.

Next checked on ECF and came across a bunch of closed threads. That yes alot of bickering was going on and can understand closing them. Thing about this is it seems a valid concern. This is not a product that I want in my juice and Isn't this what ECF is for? That we are part of an Emerging market that we the community want it to be as safe as possible. Isn't ECF the voice to our vendors.

I worry and think this is valid concern and this is the place this concern should be discussed.

Comments

This issue has been discussed extensively on ECF and you can easily find the relevant threads. In the end this is a personal decision and, basically, you have all the information you need.

1. Inhaling diacetyl is known to have severe health risks.

2. Like any toxin, the harm is proportionate to the dose and the length of time consumed: more is worse.

3. There are two arguments about the infrequent inhalation of small amounts:
a. No harm is caused unless the amount inhaled is significant, over a long period, so you have nothing to worry about. Or:
b. i. Why inhale anything at all that is known to be toxic when inhaled. What's next - a low dose of cyanide to get the almond flavor?
b.ii. Maybe every molecule of diacetyl destroys a lung cell. Is that a good thing? Lung cells cannot be repaired or replaced, once gone they're gone.

In addition it is suggested that other ketones may have similar risks, so that in fact there may be no safe buttery flavors.

These are the issues: make your own decision, as nobody knows the answers. Some avoid diacetyl like the plague, others couldn't care less. Most are somewhere in between; this is the normal state of things. There is no 'answer' so it is probably unrealistic to seek one.

If regulatory authorities become involved, they would certainly ban diacetyl as a flavoring for inhaled consumer products. There are no cases in which a nice flavor outweighs a known serious health risk. On the other hand, a tiny amount once in a while is not going to kill you. You just wouldn't vape diacetyl if you are a runner, basically, as it has the potential to permanently reduce lung function.

It's your life and your decision.

Frightening. I've been DIYing and adding a buttered popcorn flavour to enhance my french vanilla and connamon danish. thanks, I'm gonna read up now, and ask a few more questions.
