Mooch - 30A Battery & Best Battery

Most of the brands other than Samsung, LG, and Sony either use those batteries (rewrapping them) or use lower performing batteries from another company. One of the most important things to remember when shopping for high drain batteries is...

There are no 18650 batteries with a genuine rating over 30A! | E-Cigarette Forum

Here are the results of my testing six different high drain batteries at 30A...

All 30A-Capable Batteries Shootout -- Bench Test Results -- Which battery is best? | E-Cigarette Forum

The best batteries in these tests?
The LG HD2 or Sony VTC4.

The Aspire battery did very well but is an ICR-chemistry cell which can be a bit less safe to use in mechanical or unprotected mods. The Sony VTC4 is what I recommend for over 20A and is becoming more widely available now. But only buy from known, reliable vendors of genuine batteries.

Haven't tested AW though yet...do they manufacture their own cells?

There aren't any 18650's with a continuous rating over 30A but there are a couple with true 30A ratings; LG HB6 and LG HB2. The VTC4 is a 20A battery but it can be pushed to 30A. It's the only choice for going above 20A or so if you want more than the 1500mAh capacity of the HB6/HB2. I highly recommend the VTC4 for higher than 20A, it's the best overall battery for high current.

VTC5's are a 20A battery so the VTC4's are a better choice for above-20A vaping.
There are only two true 30A batteries, the LG HB6 and HB2. The best true 30A battery, in my opinion, is the LG HB6. But it's capacity is low, 1500mAh.

But, since your mod is dual battery, you could go with 20A rated batteries and enjoy the extra time between recharges. You could use the LG HG2 3000mAh battery which would last much longer than the HB6. While the HG2 relatively safe to use at 20A, no battery is "safe", it will run hotter than the HB6.

If you wanted the battery that ran the coolest no matter how hard you ran your ipv4, then the HB6 is the battery to get.

I've been seeing more and more people saying that they can use any battery in a regulated mod because the mod will protect it.

Completely untrue.

The mod will protect itself. It has no idea if the battery is being stressed too hard or not. And a battery being stressed too hard will have a shortened life and, if stressed hard enough, can vent or worse.

Some mods might monitor the battery voltage drop but that doesn't tell you how badly the battery is being overstressed as different batteries have different voltage drops. Some mods can monitor the temperature of the circuit board but that doesn't tell you the temperature of the battery, no matter how close you mount the board to the battery.

You must still select a battery that can handle the current the mod draws without overheating.

=============
REGULATED MOD AMP DRAW

A pair of HG2's, VTC5's or 25R's would be OK up to about 130W or so.
Up to about 175W the VTC4's would be OK, but better to use the HB6's.
Above 175W, get the HB6's.

For a regulated mod, in VW mode, you calculate the max current draw as Max Amps = Max Wattage / Min Battery Voltage.

From a safety standpoint whats important is your batteries continuous amp rating.

For a regulated mod, in VW mode, you calculate the max current draw as Max Amps = Max Wattage / Min Battery Voltage. Min battery voltage is usually calculated using 3.2 volts (this is the point your mod will no longer fire).

So Max Amps = 50 watts/3.2 volts = 15.625 Amps. A 20A CDR battery (like your LG HG2) will allow you to operate safely through the whole range of wattage/voltage of your devise.

Here are some options for 20A batteries (in descending mAh):
  • AW 3000 mAh 20A CDR
  • LG HG2 3000 mAh 20A CDR
  • Samsung 30Q 3000 mAh 20A CDR
  • Sony VTC5 2600 mAh 20A CDR
  • LG HE2 or HE4 2500 mAh 20A CDR
  • Samsung 25r 2500 mAh 20A CDR
The mAh stands for milli-Ampere-hours and indicates how much electric charge the battery can provide. For example, if you discharge your battery through a circuit that requires 1 milli-Ampere of current it will last 3000 hours before the battery runs down (if the mAh of your battery is 3000). The higher the mAh, the longer your battery will last before it needs charging.

I'll quote @Mooch because he says it so well.
From this thread: Whats the Best Batteries | E-Cigarette Forum

"Up to 15A or 50W = Samsung 30Q or LG HG2
Up to 20A or 75W = Samsung 25R
Over 20A or 75W = Sony VTC4

NOT Efest
NOT MXJO
NOT AWT
NOT Imren
NOT Vappower
NOT Basen
NOT Cloud Chaser

NOT any battery from a company that just buys a Sony, Samsung, or LG battery and puts their own wrap on it. Why buy one of those, for more money, when you can get the actual battery for less money? Just my personal opinion... :)"

Here are links to some of Mooch's blogs:

______________

Being that the Evic VTC Mini is a regulated mod, it won't fire any coil that is too low or has a short. That's what protection circuitry does. You'll get an error "low atomizer" or "atomizer too low" on your display screen.

The best way to determine how many amps you will be drawing (at min battery voltage) is to use the max wattage you plan on vaping at and follow this guide.

Calculating Battery Current Draw for a Regulated Mod
75 Watts

At full 75watts all the time you've only got 5 options, Sony VTC3 or VTC4, LG HB2, HB4 or HB6.
60watts and lower any 20amp battery, in this instance the LG HG2 shines, followed by the VTC4, Samsung 25R, and LG HE2/HE4 and HD2 as the major 5 workhorse cells on the market, with the Sony VTC5 coming in last
50watts and below, then the Samsung 30Q comes into play being a 15amp CDR rated battery.
