Thanks for doing a tear down and reporting it all. Don't allow yourself to get distracted and please keep reporting what you find. As far as I know you are the first one on the webs to do report a diagnostic and we are all interested in what is in there. Don't be afraid to "dumb it down" for us less techy types.

Presuming you were serious... here are the pics... which is the start. Clicking on these should open them larger...
Back of the main board... note the Test Points in a row... yeah, they are Vpp, Vss, Vdd, ICSPCLK & ICSPDAT (for programming the PIC)
They removed the marking from a package... looks like ??? MPEN 3428 512 ??? It seems to be something manufactured by SanKen Electric... but they don't like this part number... Hmmmm.
Charging Circuit:
4.7uH inductor is fed from battery voltage, inductor feeds schottky 2A/40V diode
