I've tried pretty much every kind of cotton. (cotton balls, cotton squares, the medical grade stuff and that Koh Gen Do) It all has that taste. Boiling it with distilled water helps with this but that flavor is still there. The ReadyXWick is good but not by itself IMO. What I do is use the ReadyWick inside the coil (because of the flavor and the fact that you can torch it and reuse it, where cotton you cannot) and use a cotton cloud under that to keep it moist. The problem I have (and most have) with ReadyWick is that it does not retain juice well. However, the flavor is excellent. So using the cotton + RW is the best solution and works great for me. (will also maximize your value with the readywick because you're only using a small amount for the coil)
