Vaping Terminology

18350
– A battery with dimensions 18mm x 35mm in length
18500 - A battery with dimensions 18mm x 50mm in length
18650 – A battery with dimensions 18mm x 65mm in length
20700 – A battery with dimensions 20mm x 70mm in length
21700 – A battery with dimensions 21mm x 70mm in length
26650 – A battery with dimensions 26mm x 65mm.
306 – Style of dripping atomizer with 510 threading. Can be used with L88B or 510 atomizers
510 – The most common style of connector/threading for electronic cigarettes
808 or KR808 – Another style of e-cigarette threading
901– A style of e-cigarette with a female thread.

A
Acrolein
– Compound produced when e-liquid is heated to extremely high temperatures
Adapter – Dual threaded device used to allow a specific style of atomizer with different style battery.
Advanced Personal Vaporizer (APV) – An APV is a 2nd generation e-cigarette consisting of a larger replaceable battery, and features such as variable voltage, variable wattage or temperature control
AFC – Air flow control
AIO (All-In-One) - A self contained vaping system incorporating both the atomizer and the battery
Airflow (adjustable airflow) – The part of an e-cigarette that allows more or less air to be allowed into the atomizer
All Day Vape (ADV) – The e-liquid that you personally enjoy over any other and can vape on all day
American Wire Guage (AWG) – The standard used in the US to define the diameter of wire
Analog – Slang for traditional combustible cigarettes.
Aqueous Glycerine (AG) – VG that has been thinned with water to make it less viscous
Atomizer (Atty) – The component component responsible for heating the e-liquid to the point of vaporization

BCC
– Bottom Coil clearomizer
BDC – Bottom Dual Coil
Blanks – Cartridges or cartomizers with dry filler material that is filled with e-liquid
Boost – The circuitry of a regulated mod that allows it to fire above the available voltage
Box Mod – A box shaped PV or APV
BP (Big Pharma) - Collective slang for large pharmaceutical companies
Breathing – The process of leaving an e-liquid open to the air so that flavor can develop
Brick and Mortar (B&M) – A physical store selling e-cigarettes or vaping related products
BT (Big Tobacco) - Collective slang for large tobacco companies
Buck – The circuitry of a regulated mod that allows it to fire below the voltage available in the battery
BVC – Bottom Vertical Coil

C
Cartomizer (Carto)
– A small disposable atomizer cartridge
CASAA – Consumer Advocacy for Smoke-Free Alternatives Association
CDR - Continuous Discharge Rate, the number of amps that a battery can safely deliver continuously
Chuffcap - An over sized topcap/driptip for an atomizer
Cigalike – Any e-cigarette that has a similar appearance to a traditional cigarette
Clearomiser (clearo) - A cartomizer/tank with a silica wick system feeding and a transparent tank wall
Coil – The heating element of an e-cigarette, typicaly consisting of a small coiled piece of wire
Coil Jig – A device to aid in the process of building coils

D
Deck
– The flat base area where the positive and negative posts sit on an RBA/RDA
Dewick – Removing the wick from an atomizer
Diacetyl – A flavoring used in some e-liquid for it’s buttery flavor
DIY (Do-It-Yourself) – Term used to describe the process of making your own e-liquid
DNA – The chipset and operating system used on control boards developed and manufactured by Evolv
Drip – To drip drops of e-liquid into an atomizer
Dripping – Vaping by adding drops of e-liquid directly into the atomizer chamber
Drip Tip – The mouthpiece accessory that connects to the top of an atomizer
Drip Well – The inside area of an RDA designed to catch excess e-liquid
Dry Burn – The process of removing the wicking then heating the coil to burn off residue
Dry Hit – Taking a drag from an atomizer where the coil is insufficiently saturated with e-liquid
Dual User - Someone who vapes as well as smoking tobacco

E
eGo/eGo Style
– A style of e-cig battery in a self contained unit with better performance than a cig-alike, but with some of the same ergonomic benefits.
eGo Threading – Propriety threading usually found on the Ego battery
E-Juice – The solution that is vaporized within electronic cigarette. Comprised of Vegetable glycerin, propylene glycol, nicotine and flavoring. Also referred to as E-liquid or Juice
Electronic Cigar – Made up of the same components of an ecig, but shaped to resemble a traditional tobacco cigar
Starter Kit – A kit that includes basic e-cigarette equipment, typically includes everything needed to begin vaping
E-liquid – The liquid that is vaporized in an e-cig

F
Flavor(ing)
– The particular flavor of your e liquid or the additives used to flavor it
Flooding – When too much e-liquid ends up in the atomizer.

G
Genesis Atomizer
– An RBA that uses stainless steel mesh as a wick
Glassomizer – A clearomizer that uses glass rather than plastic for the tank
Goose Neck – A flexible extended driptip.
Grub Screw – A type of screw used in atomizer posts

H
Heat steeping
– Steeping accelerated by the use of heat
Hit – The inhalation of vapor
Hot Spot – Areas of undesirably excessive heat on an atomizer coil
Hybrid – A combined topper and battery holder designed to fit together as one integrated unit
Hybrid Style – An e-cigarette (typically a mechanical mod) that has a direct to battery 510 connector

I
ICR (Lithium-Cobalt-Oxide) - A chemistry used in rechargeable batteries, not suitable for vaping use
IFR (Lithium-Ferrous-Phosphate) - A chemistry used in rechargeable batteries
IMR (Lithium-Manganese-Cobalt) - A chemistry used in rechargeable batteries. Used by many companies as a generic term for any of their batteries that are not ICR
INR - A hybrid chemistry used in rechargeable batteries that combines the materials and characteristics of IMR and ICR

J
Joules
– A unit of power often used in temperature controlled mods
Juice – Another name for e liquid

K
Knuckle Head
– An adjustable drip tip that can be set to any angle desired
Kick – A add-on device that allows you to convert an unregulated tube MOD into a Variable Wattage device
Kanthal – Trademark for a family of iron-chromium-aluminium (FeCrAl) alloys, the most commonly used wire type used in electronic cigarette heating coils

L88B
– An early design of atomizer for smaller e-cigarettes, used before cartomizers became popular
Li-Po – Lithium Polymer rechargeable battery, often used as a non-removable power source in APVs
Lithium Ion (Li-Ion) – Popular type of rechargeable battery
Lung Hit (Direct-to-Lung, DTL) – Style of vaping where the vapor is inhaled directly into the lungs

M
mA
– 1/1000th of an amp
Macro Coil – Obsolete term describing a coil using 24AWG or lower wire and an internal diameter of 3mm or larger
mAh – Milliampere-hour, used to describe the capacity of a battery
Mechanical Mod (Mech Mod, Mech) – An electronic cigarette that has no electronics or wiring, typically just a metal tube, switch and connector for an atomizer
Micro coil – Obsolete term describing a coil using 26-28AWG wire and an internal diameter of 2mm
Mod – Short for modified/modification. This originally referred to modifying a flashlight or a battery to be used in vaping, but is now commonly used to refer to any vaping device that is not a cig-alike
Modder - A person who modifies an electronic cigarette to their preference, often to improve the devices functionality or power level
Mouth To Lung (MTL) – Vapor is pulled into the mouth first and then inhaled into the lungs

N
Nano coil
– Obsolete term describing a coil using 28AWG or higher wire and an internal diameter of less than 2mm
Nicotine (Nic) – The addictive substance found within traditional and electronic cigarettes
Nicotine Level – The amount of nicotine present in e-liquid. Usually measured in mg/ml
NiMH – Nickel-Metal Hydride, a chemistry used in some rechargeable batteries
Noob (Noobie) – Someone very new to vaping.
No Resistance Wire – Conductive wire that is used in RBAs to complete a circuit to the atomizer coil
NRT – Nicotine Replacement Therapy

O
Ohm (Ω)
– The standard unit of electrical resistance
Organic Cotton – Cotton typically used for vaping that has not been bleached or overly processed.

P
Parallel
– Batteries in a parallel configuration will have the combined amp limits and the combined mAh capacity of both batteries.
Passthrough (PT) – A e-cig that plugs directly into the USB port
PCC – Personal (or portable) Charging Case. Allows an electronic cig battery to be stored and charged on the go
PEG (Polyethylene Glycol) – Polyethylene Glycol, a less common ingredient found in e liquid
Pen Style – Styles of electronic cigarettes resembling a ball point pen
Personal Vaporizer (PV) – Another name for an Electronic Cigarette
POD Mod - An all-in-one e-cig system that blends the ease-of-use of a cig-alike with the experience of an enthusiast device. Typically a closed system meant to be used with pre-filled cartridges
Propylene Glycol (PG) – One of two main substances used in the making of e-liquids. E-liquids containing a higher proportion on PG will tend to be more viscous (thinner)
Propanediol – Used as an alternative ingrediant to PG in e-liquid
Priming/Prime – The act of preparing a wick or atomizer cartridge to vape

Rayon
- An alternative to cotton, stainless steel, ceramic and other types of wicks
Rebuildable Atomizer (RBA) – An atomizer that is designed to have the coils and wicking replaced by the user
RDA - Rebuildable Dripping Atomizer
Regulated Mod - An e-cigarette that uses electronics to regulate the power supplied to the coils
Resistance – The ability of a coil to resist the flow of electricity, measured in ohms
RBA – Rebuildable atomizer
RDA – Rebuildable Dripping Atomizer
RDTA – Rebuildable Dripping Tank Atomizer
Round wire - Refers to coils made with conventional round wire as opposed to more exotic builds
RTA – Rebuildable tank atomizer

S
Series
– Batteries are configured ‘end to end’ electrically. This doubles the available voltage, mAh and amp capacity remain the same
Silica – A wicking material
Smokeymizer – An atomizer and cartridge combined, disposable but refillable a few times
Squonk(ing) – Squonk box mods are mods that have a modified 510 connection where a bottle of juice is in the mod and can be squeezed (squonked) to push liquid into the atomizer from below
Stacking – Stacking one battery on top of another in a mechanical tube mod creating a series configuration
Steeping – Allowing your e-liquid to sit either open to the air, or in a sealed container to allow flavors to develop
Sub-Ohming – The practice of using coil/s with a resistance of less than 1.0 ohm

T
Tailpiping
– Using an atomiser without a drip tip
Tank – An atomizer which uses a ‘tank’ to hold a reservoir of e-liquid
Temperature Control (TC) – An advanced APV technology that uses changes in the resistance certain metals to limit the temperature of coils in an atomizer using known TCR (Temperature Coefficient of Resistance) values.
Thermal Runaway – The most extreme level of battery failure. Pushed beyond it’s limits, an exothermic chemical chain reaction occurs resulting in extreme temperatures, smoke, flames and the destruction of the battery
Throat Hit (TH) – The feeling a vaper experiences when the vapor hits their throat
Tobacco Harm Reduction (THR) – Policy or practice of providing less harmful nicotine-containing products
Tootlepuffer - Low wattage vaper
Topper – A device that goes on top of an electronic cigarette battery/battery holder
Tube Mod – Any PV or APV that is tube shaped

U
Unregulated Mod
- An electronic cigarette that has no wattage or voltage regulation

V
Vapor’s Tongue
– When a vapers taste buds become desensitized
Vent holes – Holes in the casing of a mod designed to allow the release of gases if a battery vents
Venting a Battery – The process where a battery is taken beyond its specifications and gas and liquid is released from the battery
VG (Vegetable Glycerine) – A common ingredient found in e liquid, Thicker than PG
Voltage Drop – The amount of voltage lost as the electricity travels through your device to your coils
Voltage Sag - The transient drop in a batteries available voltage under load caused by internal resistance
VOOP – Vaping while defecating
VV (Variable Voltage) – E-cg that allows the user control over the voltage output
VW (Variable Wattage) – E-cg that allows the user control over the wattage output

W
Wick
– Wicks are used to deliver e liquid to the coil in electronic cigarettes by capillary action
Woody (Wood Mod) – Any PV or APV that is handmade and fitted inside a wooden tube or box
Wrap – One revolution of wire in a coil
WTA (Whole Tobacco Alkaloids) - E-liquid containing minor tobacco alkaloids in addition to nicotine to help vapers who find that conventional e-liquid does not satisfy them.
