If you are starting out and smoked 2 packs or more a day of cigarettes, please consider an ecig with a larger battery. I just received the Riva, but there is also the EGO and similar clones out there. I really don't recommend that you go for something smaller. This might be a few more dollars up front, but in the long run you will not be throwing money out the window.
I started this odyssey about 6 weeks ago and ordered a kit with a "coupon" from eBay. Luckily with cartridges and a lifetime guarantee, it "only" set me back $50.00 altogether. I have read about all of the $250 horror mall stories on this board and count myself lucky. I'm still not sure what model it was but my guess is that it was a 404. It was an automatic, had to be charged constantly and the carts were so small, I had to add
juice every couple of minutes. I did cut down considerably on my 3 PAD habit which I had for over 40 years. I knew there was promise with ecigs and this was definitely not the right device for me.
I post on another site (which is not ecig related) and mentioned my switching over from cigarettes to ecigs and one of the members recommended ECF and here I came, and learned. BTW...I was happily surprised at how many successful ecig users there are on that board!
There was/is excellent advice here at ECF and after reading all the raves about the Joye510, purchased a kit plus spare parts. (I read the raves on Riva/Ego etc but they were pricier). Prior to my 510 arriving from China, I bought a 510 inline battery pass-through with cartos, and became tethered to it/and my computers. The 510 was so far superior to the first mistake I made and I stopped cigarettes altogether within a couple of days of
vaping the 510. The problem is, about a week ago, I started to crave analogs again. I never gave in but I had the hollow feeling in my stomach and started to lose some of the satisfaction that the 510 was giving me.
The 510 became a mistake too. Altogether I spent about $70.00 including spare parts on it. The attys and cartos can be used with Riva (thank goodness). Hopefully my son will start using it. He only smokes about 1/2-1 PAD. The 510 is perfect for the lighter smoker. He won't have to recharge the battery every 2 hours like I had to.
From all the raves here I decided to go to Riva. It came in the mail yesterday and I love it. The minute I started
vaping, that dull achy craving went away. The vapor is lovely and yet more importantly, the throat hit is there. That was far and few between with me with the 510 unless I really worked hard at it. I don't want to work hard if I don't have to.
As I said, I was a heavy smoker and yes, I am a heavy vaper. The battery lasts me about 5 1/2 hours. Which is perfectly manageable for me.
The Riva is definitely larger than the Joye510 and reminds me of an elegant stogie (mine is in platinum). where the 510 is similar to a longer regular cigarette. It took a bit to get used to holding the 510 and I am finding myself grasping on to the Riva and enjoy it! If real cigarettes were used as a prop, this baby is a mega prop!
I'm sure if I bought the Ego or any of the other larger ecigs I'd be just as happy right now but that isn't the point. The point is that for many (myself included) money is scarce right now and to spend money on something that won't fulfill your needs IMHO is throwing it away. I hear a lot of people justifying the money that they're spending by talking about all the money they are saving from not smoking any more. I live in a part of NY where cigarettes are $9.50 per pack now. I am not saving $30 a day by not smoking because cigarettes became unaffordable for me a couple of years ago and I started to stuff my own. This brought my cost to about at most $4.50 a day. Now that I am settled with my hardware, the juice will cost be about $45.00 a month and parts I've figuring in another $15.00 on the average. I intend to DIY in the near future ( I make my own natural vanilla extract with vodka and Tahitian vanilla beans).`I have to wait now because of all of the monetary growing pains that came with this great new adventure and would have had the money for the DIY if I didn't buy the 510 in the first place.
So to get back to my two points here! The Riva rocks and if you were/are a heavy smoker please use your money wisely and go bigger.
(Not that bigger is always better with everything, but with ecigs, I highly recommend it.

)
And have I mentioned? ECF rocks too!
