Thanks to all the "southern" talk here lately I had something for breakfast that I haven't had in at least 10 years...a mater sandwich! OMG!! Was it GOOD!! Sliced home grown tomatoes, fresh white bread, salt and pepper equaled absolute heaven!!
Had me some fresh skillet fried okry (okra) a couple of days ago.

Memories of Mom.

Yum!! Breaded? My grandmother on my dad's side loved okra boiled. Tried it once and heaved the whole time the slimy stuff was going down my throat. I love it breaded and fried! Or sliced in soups.

I love those! A little mayo for me, with homegrown tomatoes nothing's better!
Them's some good chit, man! Love a good tomato sandwich! Gotta have a reeeeeeeeally good tomato, though; not that crap they pass off as tomatoes in the grocery stores these days. :nah:

Oh my! You guys have me STARVING this morning!! Even though I am in Michigan, my family is all from SE Kentucky - we spent lots of time there each summer, and the FOOD was always so special to us. My Grandmothers on both sides loved to cook. What fond memories -- cornbread, pinto beans, vegetables of every kind from their gardens, fresh pies, and home made candy -- YUM! PeanutButter Divinity candy made by my dad's mom will always have a special place in my heart. Though she has been gone from us a very long time, I can still see her in her kitchen, always wearing a dress and an apron, and I can close my eyes and SMELL the wonderful flavors of those delicious meals and family times gathered around a table enjoying time with relatives who would come from all over to spend time together.

I *try* to keep that going for my own family -- yesterday we had fried corn and fresh green beans, always a favorite - and BOTH loaded with extra BACON and BACON GREASE. Can't cook without it when you are doing it "southern style"!

"They" say sense of smell is the one that is most strongly tied to memories.

I won't eat mayo unless it's mixed with something else. I don't like the taste. :)
I'm not much for mayo myself, but nothing beats it on a tomato sandwich. White bread (which I never eat) and a dash of pepper... mmm, mmm good.

My mom used to fry bread in the pan after she finished frying the bacon (in the remaining bacon grease, of course.) MMmmmm!! And now I want a Wilted Lettuce Salad - double yummm!! (That would be a big ol' bowl of fresh lettuce, crumble the bacon on top and then drizzle with the hot bacon grease. I always tell myself that the healthy aspect of the lettuce cancels out the rest so my arteries needn't worry. not )

You guys are making me hungry. Had fat, juicy blackberries from the canes for breakfast, but now it's time to get some yellow cherry tomatoes and greens from the garden, fry some bacon in an iron skillet, and construct sandwiches on buttermilk bisquits. Then I'll perfume the house making mint vinegar while I sit in a rocking chair on the front porch, watching the waterfall in the river and waiting for a bald eagle to cruise overhead. Tough work, but someone's got to do it.
