I think that would be a wonderful improvement to shaving or waxing or electrolysis. Why doesn't someone invent it? How did it work in the book? Was it explained?

Thanks, CatLady. Are the titles you mentioned part of the series and should be read in order, or are they unrelated? I wouldn't want to get confused by reading the series out of order, but I might find one of them, even if the library does't have Methuselah's Children.

Celticluvr, I looked up titles I worked on that sounded like they might be by J. D. Robb, and it turns out there are quite a few I copy edited back in the '90s: Naked in Death, Glory in Death, Immortal in Death, Rapture in Death, Ceremony in Death, Conspiracy in Death, Loyalty in Death, Witness...

When I worked as a proofreader/copy editor for publishing companies, I got paid to read at least one of her books -- more than one, I think. Did she feature good vampires in some of her books, or was that someone else?

What else would you suggest? I thought Stranger in a Strange Land was very good. Is there another book as good? More than one? Suggest a few, and I'll look for them in the library. My local library is small, though. I was looking for Tom Sawyer a while back, and gave it several tries in case...

I read Stranger in a Strange Land long ago and really enjoyed it. Does that make me a fan, too?

Tutoring today gave me a pleasant surprise. The boy who I usually worry over so produced something I consider truly creative. This boy is about to enter 6th grade in Sept. -- just so you know his age, in case you didn't. Last time's writing assignment for him was to write a friendly letter. I...

Lizzie, I'm sorry to hear your water coop is in such disarray. Is the other group more organized? What if you joined them, or even both? Your alternative is to make proposals you think are helpful and meaningful and hope enough of your group goes along with them. But in that case, you probably...

I wish I had known about that when I got a bad spider bite on my arm a couple of years ago! It was awful. I was visiting a friend in a Virginia suburb of Washington, DC, and I guess they get more lethal spiders down there, because at night, we were sitting around a table on her deck, and...

Interesting! Garlic sure is a wonder! I read somewhere long ago that to avoid swimmer's ear, you should stick some rubbing alcohol in your ears. I had a bad earache after swimming one time. I needed antibiotics to cure that, but it was so awful that I decided that, after each shower, I'd dab...

Here are some online instructions. How to Build a Horseshoe Pit - Bob Vila I always thought it was called a horseshoe pitch (because you throw them). But what do I know? They are calling it a horseshoe pit, apparently.

You're right, of course, Awsum. I wish the boy would improve his attitude in every way, and the sloppy handwriting is just one symptom of a very troubling syndrome. As for keyboarding skills, he probably thinks his are adequate, and maybe they are. He and his siblings are on their iPads...

I tend not to focus on handwriting much. The oldest boy, though, is so sloppy that I sometimes can't read a certain word he wrote. One time recently, I didn't understand a word, so I asked him what it was, and he couldn't even read his own handwriting! In a case like that, I do scold him and say...

They don't particularly like copying words, so I give them spelling words to learn, and then I ask them to spell them at the next lesson. If they didn't learn them in whatever way they prefer, then they have to write each word 10 times -- but only those words they weren't able to learn by...

I recently found a great resource for tutoring. It's "released tests." I assume these are tests that they give kids at the end of a grade to see how they measure up to what a kid in that grade should know. Whatever they are, they have really well-written and interesting reading comprehension...

Lizzie, those are great photos! I can tell you had fun. I liked the sequence of getting Wiseguy to jump. And that one where he's standing and I can see his conformation -- he looks really good. You sure lucked out when you bought him! How does Pony Baloney take it when you take Wiseguy away...
