Radio Shack? Take it back and have them replace it if you jsts bought it. Don't forget to take yer receipt. Which one was it, the cheapie or a nice one? They have different grades
They also carry the PCB's to make your recycled batts into "protected" ones:
Protection Circuit Module (PCB) for 3.7V Li-ion (18650/18500) cell Battery (2.0A Limit)
I believe they are designed to that the heat is concentrated at the end of the tip, if it has a flat side, then that is where the heat is concentrated (of course I might not know what I'm talking about) ... important that you tin the tip so that the heat is transferred evenly.
The secret with soldering irons is to keep the tip clean and tight. Tighten up the tip, heat it up, then clean it by rubbing it on a damp sponge, then tin it (apply a tiny bit of solder to the tip to make it shiny). Rub again against the sponge and yer ready to go.
Soldering: Soldering 101
Some of them have a built-in li-ion 3.7v batt and you charge the batt with the crank. You can crank for a couple minutes, then vape a while (theoretically) ???
Also, the switch before the push button is your "master switch", keeping from accidental pocket firing of your mod. Not essential but really a good safety idea.
1. Tactile switches are rated for like 50-100ma, where the atty itself draws 1.5-2 AMPS, way more than the switch is capable of handling. Using this same diagram, you can put a tiny tact switch where the touch pad is. Your switch will last indefinitely because it is working within it's specs...
