    A lot of people are just laying a bed of cotton under the coil now. It started because people were wrapping coils on such a small diameter that you can't thread a wick through.

    Try a smaller diameter and make sure the coils are wrapped as close as possible. You don't need to pre torch the kanthal, but it helps. Make sure you heat and squeeze the coils with tweezers. Don't touch the coil while you're firing it though.
