I use the tape trick more for the snug door factor than ease of battery removal. I often vape left handed and find with the door against my palm, it is too easy to move the door if it isn't nice and snug.
As others have said, the thickness of your juice and type of atty are variables to be considered. That being said, squonking is as much an art as a science. You will find your rhythm. :)
