There are no sellers of batteries that will tell you they are fake. :)
The Sony store won’t know anything about these batteries as they were never meant to be sold individually to us. They are only meant to be built into fully protected battery packs by Sony’s large commercial/industrial customers.
If it’s mislabeled it’s a fake as that would not be done by Sony/Murata. :)
I’m 99.99% sure they’re fake. There’s just no way for me to prove it from here.
I’ve never seen a genuine VTC5A with those four radial score lines on the venting disk under the top contact. The VTC5’s I’ve seen do have the score lines though.
That doesn’t guarantee there aren’t VTC5A’s with the score lines though. Testing is the only way to know for sure. In my opinion...
The VTC5D and VTC6A use a bottom vent. A couple others too but I forget which.
Any cell with a bottom vent has become more of a concern for me if the mod might prevent the ring from opening properly in case of an accidental short-circuit or anything else that might force the cell into thermal...

Eight different fake battery types to report!
The fakes have a much larger top contact and do not have the bottom vent ring and QR code box that genuine Murata 21700 VTC6A’s have. The fakes have a couple of characters...

These cells have a different metal can and venting disk from known genuine Sony VTC5A’s but they do have the two “dimples” on top common to all VTC 18650’s and tested as...
This is a repost due to a mistake I made. ktvapes2632 on Instagram noticed I used a photo of fake VTC5A’s instead of fake VTC5’s. Luckily the same cell is used for both fakes so nothing else changes but here is the corrected post. My apologies for any confusion this has caused

It’s the time the testing takes. Ten cells checked would take half a day, at least. That has to be done for each cell type they receive, every time they get a shipment.
They also have to visually check every cell in every box to make sure all of the cells are matching visually. This is a backup...

The fake 30T’s are using a valid code, a zero, as the second character of the first line of codes on the metal can. They are...

These fakes are very hard to detect visually. Both fake and genuine HG2’s have four spot weld points on top and free-floating (not glued on) top ring insulators. The fakes...

Eight different fake battery types to report!
These fakes have two micro-weld lines on top, underneath the top insulating ring. Genuine 25R’s do not have these micro-weld lines. In bright light, look at the metal can...

Eight different fake battery types to report!
The fakes do not have the four top spot weld points that the HE4 has. The fakes also have a flatter ring around the cell near the top and a darker plastic top crimp seal...

The code on the can makes me think they might be 2.75A-rated Samsung 29E’s. This fake looks a LOT like the 30Q and would test out about the same in capacity if a testing...

A vendor sent me a box of fakes, dozens of batteries, that he received after saying no to the supplier’s offer to send samples. They were sent anyway. This vendor will not be named because they do not sell fakes and were never going to sell these samples. They were sent to me for...
I love flavors! I just don’t have any money to buy the ones I like very often. :)
The almost unscented juice I use a lot is also a lot less conspicuous here in Manhattan when vaping outdoors.
