You're looking for one that is putting out 5v and around 1amp. (1000 mA)
If the amperage is a bit higher you'll be fine, but the voltage needs to stay under 6v.
When you say second battery pack that isn't built in, what do you mean? Are you talking about having a battery pack with a wire extending to the atomizer, or just having a second battery to switch to while charging the dead one?
I've done vodka before (Han, amazing stuff) with so-so results, I cleaned a couple atomizers earlier with lemon juice and it worked well. One of them wasn't producing much vapor at all, the other had a permanent wintergreen flavor to it after a friend dropped a single drop of flavoring directly...
I stand corrected on the chip, all of the regulators I was looking at were at around 3v drop. It does seem a bit large though, 10.9mm x 15.6mm x 4.9mm according to the spec sheet. Shouldn't be a problem for a box mod, but trying to cram it in something screwdriver or magnum sized wouldn't be...
Linear regulators run at about 40% efficiency and require a vin 3 volts higher than regulated vout. The extra voltage isn't saved, its bled off via heat from the voltage regulator chip.
tl;dr You need 8v to run a 5v regulator and your batteries will only last 40% as long as they did unregulated.
I've used the 50mA tact switches without issues, as have a bunch of others. If it still makes you uncomfortable, you can use the submini pushbuttons (radioshack part# 275-1571), they're rated to 500mA so you'll only be pushing the limits by a tad.
Don't worry about it reducing your voltage...
I rigged up a 901 pushbutton passthru yesterday when I got tired of lackluster battery performance, it works amazingly well. PM me if you want one made for you and what kind of dimensions/layout you'd prefer.
Heres mine:
