Yup, Heck you dont have to use a cartridge at all. I often "tailpipe" it for ease. Drawbacks though are... Sometimes gets hot... although I dont ever feel its too hot for me to handle. If you were to carry it in your pocket without a catridge on top, you risk getting junk in it...
