Really good question. I've heard him mention an 18650 mech and 35A battery through his posts, so I kind of already expect an overrated rewrap.

A regulated mod would be a wise purchase, for your own safety. Leave the mechs alone until you understand how it should be used properly.

I always calculate my coils with 4.2v. That makes it so I know the max possible amp draw for that coil and lets me keep a margin of safety. Single 18650s I stick with .20-.22 ohms. With a single 21700 I do .16-.17 ohms. I drain my battery to 3.6v.

When mine acts up I do pretty much the same as @Don29palms said to do. I tend to clean that mod when I set it up for use, and when I break it down for storage, needed or not. My DS doesn't do it as much with the silver kit installed.
