Attack of the (Kayfun v4) Clones!

http://www.gearbest.com/electronic-cigarettes/pp_127081.html Does anybody have any experience with this company or this particular "no name" clone? It's a great price. It might be worth ordering for parts if nothing else.

I'd have to say I agree with his assessment. Eventually the latest and greatest OS won't run on the older hardware. I experienced with my G1, my wife's Behold II and my G2. At some point, you've got to upgrade the hardware to match the OS.

Well, the current surface is Win8 RT... that's a lot more like a phone than a PC. However, the second surface that comes out after the first of the year is Win8 Pro so it should have no problems dual booting. I'd be curious to know how the RT version will differ from the Pro in that area.

You know... I don't think it did, but it's honestly hard to remember. I rooted the G2 before ever booting into stock.

Yeah, I got the G1 the day it came out. It was an HTC but it didn't run Sense. It was stock Android. I also got the G2 and loved that phone. And now I'm on the GS3 and it's been pretty damn amazing if I must say.

Root voids most warranties. Actually, it's the tampered bootloader that voids the warranty, I think. If the phone is trashed and can't be powered on (ruined by water, overheated to failure etc...) they'll never know if it was rooted. If the phone is still usable, you can flash the factory OEM...

Unfortunately, to do an image level backup, you have to have root.

What elmattias and TheSenator said. Nandroid is probably THE main reason why gaining root is useful. Full image backup, sans sdcard. I upgraded my wife's HTC One S to CM10 from ICS Sense last night. I set up the new ROM and realized that I hadn't backed up her text's properly (Titanium can't...

Right, and like I said last night, Clockwork has a tether app that's free and doesn't require root. It just requires you to install a client on whatever PC you want to tether to...

Well, with the Mac, in order to dualboot, you have to use Bootcamp. There may be a way around it but it's so simple with bootcamp, I can't imagine a reason to not use it. In order to use VMWare Fusion, you'll have to use bootcamp anyway. All Fusion does is let you run the Windows install - in...

I hear you, and Ubuntu is still touted as the best intro to Linux for most people. I just feel like its UI has changed to be almost unusable (get off my lawn). Most of the good distros have excellent installers now, so that doesn't seem to be a big issue anymore. Besides, with bootcamp, it...

Well, based on the few threads I read, I can't blame you for being apprehensive. Elmattias is right though. You could load Ubuntu (Or Mint... it's better for a beginner imho - or Windows if you have a license) in Bootcamp and it looks like it doesn't share the problems that running Heimdall...

Here's a more focused start. This won't relieve you of any reading but it will keep you from running in the wrong direction. Heimdall - cross-platform, open-source replacement for Odin (will work on Mac). Another thread for getting root on the Charge that mentions Heimdall. [ROOT] [KERNEL]...

Looks like you're right. Now that I'm thinking about it, I don't think I had to wipe mine just to gain root. One of the benefits of Odin I guess. :) That being said, it's almost pointless to root if you're going to leave the stock ROM. So once you're rooted, get Titanium Backup (pay for...

I was just notified that Clockwork Mod has a tethering app that doesn't require root. It does require you to install a client on the computer you want to tether to though. Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk 2

With Cyanogen, it's built in. However, there are tethering apps for any rooted phone. As long as you're not using the provider's tethering app, they have no way to know you're using the wireless for that purpose. That could present an ethical dilemma for some, but we won't get into that. :)

Sandy, I know you've mentioned it but what phone model do you have? I've yet to root a phone that didn't require a wipe for it to take effect. Most likely, you'll be starting from scratch once you root. CM10 on the S3 is amazingly smooth. There are a couple small quirks, but it sure beats...

I don't have a good answer for you Dave. JellyBean apparently lacks that feature too. I know that for a lot of people, Touchdown is the only thing they'll use for corporate email. I'm honestly not sure if it will work with POP accounts though. I remember K9 was a pretty good alternate when I...

Unfortunately, you can't 'like" posts or see your posts if they were liked. The notifications work flawlessly though so it's good when you're not at a computer. As for the launcher, I'll have to get back to you once I flash an AOSP ROM on this phone. It's my first foray into ICS also, so...
