In the midst of the HV debate, I just had to come up with something with even more potential for disaster. I think I'll call it.....

The Darwin HV mod

Its still just a concept with no real substance yet, but I bet there is a diesel mechanic out there thats saying to himself, "Hmm...."

First, a little rudementary auto mechanics (very rudimentary, I'm no mechanic!)

A gasoline vehicle uses spark plugs to ignite the compressed fuel/air mixture. A Diesel engine doesn't use spark plugs, instead it compresses the mixture and allows the combination of that preasure and the allready present heat to ignite it.

For a Diesel engine to start it uses glow plugs to heat the chamber to the point that it can ignite.

My idea is to use the glowplugs as an atomizer. It would require a pretty hefty 12V system however. (but your atomizer would last a very long time!!!)

This post is made mostly in jest, but I think there is some kind of possibility here.

My brain is a very interesting place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there. Oh,...wait.....

I forgot they were 24V. Like I said, I'm not a mechanic.

Hmmm. Glowplugs from RC cars. I had an airplane that used them when I was a kid. We got it to run twice before the glowplug died.
Did they ever improve them since then. It just might work if they don't die all the time. And it seems to me they run on 6v if I remember correctly.

You know I'm going to have to. It just makes to much sense. Although it will probably have to be a pipe mod and not a cigarette mod due to the size of the glow plug.

But imagine it. RC glow plug atty and a precision pump.

Heck with the pipe, I think this thing (if it works) will be my E-Hookah design.

And if we can pull it off at low voltage..... Well less voltage in theory = less risk.

Don't get much lower than 1.5v

First post ever!!! Arent' you forgetting a key component in this idea. Wouldnt the liquid air mixture need to be compressed to be effective? And the differences between diesel and e-liquid would be substantial. However, this is a good idea, I'd love to hear if you have any sucess.

I'm guessing the idea in general tho is to have an externally controlled heat source that emcompasses the e-liquid (rather then direct contact with a coil). Much like the idea for an isolated ceramic mini-heater inside the atomizer. But instead the heat would surround the liquid seems that you would create more potential surface area for the atomized liquid. Could mean more vapor. Now I'm just rambling let us know if you come up with something.

LOL

No, I'm just planning on using the glow plugs. Never ment to use the actual engine.

My orriginal vision was sitting on the living room floor with a 12v car battery some wire and a diesel glowplug in a tube, dripping e-juice. Hence the name 12v HV Darwin mod.

If the ....... product of that vision works, it will be using a 1.5v RC glow plug. Which would actualy make it less dangerous. (depending upon duty cycle and power requirements of the glowplugs.)
I'd have to rename it,.... "The slightly more idiot proof mod."

Nope, mostly 12V, but usually 2 to 4 batteries in parallel. 24V is common in military vehicles, maybe that's where you got the idea.

EDIT: As for big diesels engines, glow plugs are only used to start them in extreme cold weather climates. Most big trucks in the U.S. don't even have them any more.

Due to the 'highish' amps / volts requirement of the diesel glow plug the battery size is going to be a major problem for a portable / personal device..

Using a model engine 1.5 volt glow plug is a better idea, providing it lasts long enough to be worth while.

I should imagine that nitro fuel burns a lot cleaner.

Connect one up in a little tube on the kitchen table / bench, get it glowing and drip some juice on it, then suck it and see.

Next test would be to keep cycling it on / off and see how long it lasts.
