I don't really see it as proprietary, he has to be getting them somewhere, it is an odd size though, they are much cheaper than proprietary. The ones at madvapes could be used with a magnet but not advisable if you can get button top elsewhere.

If the odd battery size is a no go for you, consider the Buzz Pro. If he's still got blemished for sale they're really close in price. Same electronics, it's just a little sorter than the IP with a slightly larger diameter.

Is it not a good idea to use these batts with a magnet? Is there a safety issue?

The magnet could move and short against the body, unlikely but it could be a potential issues. It's best just to get button top, notcigs sales them for basically the same price and it's not a item your going to have to replace that often if ever over the life of the mod.

If the mag shorts against the side it'll just shut down. There's tons of safety features in the circuitry of those things. They're about the safest mods out there.
Still easier to just get them from NotCigs though.
