I received a box mod today to go along with the 14500 unprotected batteries that came with my now-dead dse-901. It takes one battery, has an on-off switch, and the wiring/soldering looks nice.

My question is: why do I need protected batteries? I keep the on/off switch turned off while its not in use, and I only keep the button pressed for 5 seconds at a time while vaping.

Also, are there specific brands of batteries that are supposed to be used with these?

You might take a look at the info on these pages as it could help you make a decision on this:

It's always going to be a personal decision - once you have the info.

A plastic battery holder boxmod is probably safer than a metal tube mod if the worst happens, as it may blow open 'safely' instead of exploding violently. On the other hand, it might melt in your hand...

At least drill a few de-gassing holes in it, if you stick with the unprotected battery. Vent holes are a good safety feature. Drill them, if you can, so the gas vents away from your face and hand. But the fix is a safer battery - either a protected Li-ion or a Li-MN, or maybe an AW-made LiFePO4 14500. You might need a new charger for the last two.

If you buy more batts, then if you get protected Li-ions then your existing charger should be OK. Don't buy the cheapest batts you can find, you get what you pay for. AW are a good make. I've got less than 50 charges out of cheap Li-ions.
