So... all I ever see recommendations for are 18650s. I'm looking at picking up a 14500 mod and was wondering about good batteries. (Also thinking about a 14650 as well...)

I wouldn't be going below a .5 ohm build most likely. The atomizer that comes with the mod is a gravity fed RTA so anything lower than that probably wouldn't be able to keep up on wicking.

I know there's a few new-ish brands out like MXJO and Xtar, how do I tell which one is better?

mAh is relative, I know these type batteries average about 700, but higher is always better as it's less that I have to carry for the day, but not a deal killer.

Anybody know of a comprehensive list or something with mAh and continuous amps listed for different batteries? Or any suggestions?

(Please note price will also have a say in any decisions as well, there's a reason I don't shell out for Sony VTC5s! :( )

Thanks so much in advance!

Best thing to do is pull up the data sheet on the battery you are interested in using, then use this calculator ....below chart has most all of the stats you need:
Battery mAh & C Rating = amp Calculator

You will see that 14500 batts, and certainly anything smaller than that, are NOT made for 0.5 ohm vaping.

Yup. The data on the page Racehorse linked to shows that most 14500 batteries max out at 4.8 amps. The Efest is rated 5.6A, but Efest is known for over rating their batts.

0.9 ohms draws 4.7A, but you'll probably want to give it a bit of headroom, so say 1.2 ohms at 3.5A. That means if your resistance is really 1 ohm the battery will see 4.2A which is still within the spec.

The other consideration here is run time. Consider a 700 mAh battery being drained at 3,500 mA (3.5A). Run time to totally empty will be 12 minutes which is 140, five second drags from it before the batt gets down to 3V. You will likely not want to vape it down that far, so you're looking at maybe 70-80 hits from that battery.

These are all reasons why I most often choose 18650 batts for my mech mods.

Yay calculators! The .5 ohm thing was a guess, I know nothing about any batts other than 18650... but I figured it would get somebody to post. :vapor: Anyways, I'm more comfortable with 1.2-1.5 builds as I know they're pretty much always safe.

The ohm build you calculated from is actually the bottom end of everything I have built currently so your math hits home. This would be my first mech ever, so I'm used to building high enough for all my VV/VW devices to recognize. One won't acknowledge anything lower than 1.2. :(

Totally didn't realize the teeny tiny run time though... 70 5sec drags would be about... 1.5-2 hours of "moderate" vape time for me. "Heavy" vaping is about 45 mins or less.

I would guess from what I've noticed/seen elsewhere, the higher I build, the longer run time, so a 1.8 ohm build would be just under 17 minutes assuming I figured out your math correctly. That's not a lot of improvement for .6 higher...

I would be wary of running anything on a 14500 battery that I wouldn't run on a 650mah ego. It's one of the reasons I never bought one. Also consider that decreased voltage won't be as noticeable at higher resistances, so you'll have to be even more aware of how low you're draining them.

I like your metaphor, 14500 is basically an eGo. Makes it stay in perspective. If I did still go with this mod, I'd probably use a battery for an hour or less then charge just to be on the safe side about draining.

Thanks for all the help guys. Guess I gotta go figure out the specs on the Xtar and MXJO batts I was looking at. If I end up going with one of those, is Amazon a safe place to buy? Saw some decent priced multi packs.

Saw this mech on a four state road trip and it just looked so cute and tiny I did the "I want!" (Yes, I'm a girl. :2cool:) Considering the price, I'd probably still buy it just for the RTA even if I wasn't gonna use the mod, never seen one like it before. It would be a cool piece to pull out at meets just for looks even if it's not a "workhorse". I've only ever seen it in this one shop three states away from where I live, so good bets on being the only one.

Never had a mech before, just VV/VW, so I figured asking questions was the best way to figure out what I need to know.

I normally use the efest IMR high drain 14500's. Madvapes has these PVTSO's and I'm going to get them next. Specs seem to be better, according to their site, and the price is about the same. PVTSO IMR 14500, 700mAh Battery, Button Top

The new AW high amp 14500 650mAh IMRs should work well with 'limited' lower Ohms (run time is another matter). They are rated at 9A continuous.

If you want small size, safe mechanical, you might head over to REOMODs on the forum. They discontinued the 14500 but still have 2.1 that take 18490. It's one of most popular mods for a reason. :)

Once in a while an orig. 14500 will show up in classies here, that one takes a 14500 and vapes great on it with the right atty build. The spring will collapse if you have any kind of short or problem, they are very safe mechanical mods.

VV/VW definitely not anything a 14500 can handle. There have been a few "cute" mods like the LRider Robust, that take a 14500 and were VV, but the battery life is so short it becomes really *annoying*.

If you LOVE the 14500 form factor, you could try a Provape-1 by provari. Lifetimes guarantee, beuatifully made, but you can't subohm on it.....it has protection circuitry and just won't fire with a low ohm atty.

I buy all my batteries from Randy over at RTD Vapor. Can't go wrong there, not interested in saving a few bucks when I know he will send me great batteries and genuine AWs.

There is a seller on Amazon- Expo international. They are legit and are even an authorized re-seller of AW batteries.
