Reached in my bag to grab my pocket knife and immediately pulled back. Something HOT and the smell of burning plastic. I quickly dumped the bag out into the sink to find my last AW IMR 18650 burning up the red plastic wrapper, end cap and several other things around it.

Completely destroyed the conection on my iPhone headphones, fused my ring to one of my dripper bottles and fused a metal earring to my silver necklace. I didn't know what to do so I grabbed a pair of pilers, grabbed the battery and threw it outside into the front yard where it's raining.

I don't understand how this happened? It was just sitting in my bag. Do 18650 batteries just start randomly burning up like this?

I'm lucky I caught it when I did, otherwise it could have burned up my whole bag and caught the house on fire. Now I'm freaked out about these batteries. Not going to buy anymore. I just bought both of them last September. I hardly ever use them. I use my LiFEPO4's mostly.

Scary.

possibly something metal in your bag ( the necklace maybe?) touched both the positive and negative battery ends at once and started shorting it out? that would be my thought.

^^^^

that could have happened with just about any battery.

From now on keep your batteries in a seperate case or get a battery holder. Probably not the safest idea to have them just floating around in a back pack with other metal items.

Yeah it didn't occure to me that perhaps the necklace or other things made a connection. How stupid of me not to even consider that when throwing them in there. I keep my small blue AW's in a plastic battery case and never had a problem with them. Guess I know now why this battery did what it did.

...as my ol' Dad always told me(while giving a good whacking)...if you aren't screwin' somethin' up, you aren't really learnin'...my ol' Dad said lots of stuff like that...usually while swingin' a switch.....

Yeah and remember they made you go get the switch off a tree knowing they were going to tear your hide up with it. Whew, lol

OMG your cracking me up mad jackack. I remember those switches like it was yesterday.

Sorry OP for hijacking your thread and I'm sorry you had that awful battery experience. I will make sure that nothing comes in contact with my chargers. Your post saved something bad possibly happening to me.

Thanks for the invite. It's a little last minute, I already have other plans. But sounds pretty cool. :)
