A protected battery would have prevented overdischarge and meltdown of the battery due to an external short circuit. I won't use a non-protected battery in a mod, regardless of chemistry.

If you want to carry an AW IMR 18650 in your pocket a plastic battery case may keep your biscuits from burnin'.

    There is no such thing as a safe IMR either.
    IMHO of course, but any bat larger than a single cell 1.2v should have a fuse (ckt breaker chip)

    That is why I would rather carry a spare PV instead of just a spare battery. Wish they made condoms for batteries like the ones for cartos.
    Looking around the internet a few weeks ago I found some nice plastic tubes with caps designed just for this purpose. They came in different sizes for different batteries and weren't much larger than the battery itself. Wish I'd bookmarked it.
