A friend of mine gave me a couple of 18650s he bought form here. Anyone have any clue what they are? Are they protected?

18650 Battery 2800mah

Not sure what is up with that battery. No clue if its protected or not. I'll say if you need a protected battery, buy some or use a fuse (with caution) with these. Better safe than sorry. :p

I doubt that they are protected as they do not appear to have the protective circuit on the top that typical ICR batteries have. I'm always wary of any battery that has no recognizable name printed on it. Even the vendor doesn't state if it is a protected or IMR high drain battery. 28000 mAh for an 18650 IMR battery would be pretty overstated in my opinion.

Use with caution if at all. (I wouldn't)

I use only AW IMR batteries from http://www.rtdvapor.com/ for both my regulated and unregulated mods.

do they have EH on the side of the battery also does it say IMR 18650? if so, then this may help, i got it of the EH website. (EHfire.com)
Chinese company. If you go to the website type in the info on the side of the battery if it is an EH battery the pic will come up with a link and info on the battery. if the battery is a IMR type battery then no it is not protected. I top off my battery each night and take it off the charger as soon as the light turns green. This is to keep it from overcharging. All batteries that are not protected need to be pulled from the charger once the light is green. Do charge the battery before they drop below 2.5V if you don't then it could ruin your battery in the long run. Please someone correct me if i am interpreting the info below incorrectly.

(IMR is the type of material)

EH 18650 2000mah 3.7V button top battery (Pro/ZMax/GGTS mod/Variable Volt 808 Gripper )
These LiMn batteries have a safe chemistry meaning no risk of venting with flame or explosion. Ideal for use in multiple cell applications.
Brand : EH (Only from our ehome company )
PCS: 2 PCS
Spec: Lithium 18650-2000mAh 3.7V
Material: IMR
Size(mm):64.88(L)*18.25(D)
Specifications:
Nominal Voltage :3.7V
Voltage at end of Dischargr:2.5V
Rated Capacity : Typical (2000mah)
Cycle Life :>500cycle
Operation Temperature Range :Charge(0~45℃ ) Discharge(-10~60℃ )
Welcome OEM!!
Note:
*Use a a Li-Ion charger. Do not use a NiMh charger.
*To ensure longevity, it is not recommended to allow the battery to discharge below 2.5V.
*Do discharged below 2.5 volts or cycle life/performance will be reduced. Maximum charge voltage is 4.25 volts.
*Chemical composition is lithium manganese oxide
*4.2V max charge, 3.7V nominal charge
*Safer chemistry, so is not available with a protection circuit. But that means you must guard against overcharge and overdischarge themselves.

No one can know for sure with the information on the battery. It could be ICR or IMR. ICR will have a higher capacity rating per size than IMR but this varies by make, model and the accuracy of labeling. IMR will offer higher battery drain than ICR and safer chemistry requiring no protection circuit. Lower battery drain capability makes ICR a poor choice for high powered mods. If you want to use ICR in a mod it should be protected. However, the protection circuits in ICR batteries have been known to interfere with the electronics of more sophisticated VV or VV/VW mods. Plus, the protection circuit itself could fail. A protected ICR will have a protection chip usually mounted in the positive end of the battery. Protected ICR will have a conductor strip running the length of the battery. This can be seen or felt under the shrink tubing cover.

AW IMR and Panasonic CGR18650CH are favorites with users here on ECF. So are the Efest IMRs.
