I listened to a ton of 70's rock in the 80's there were really only a handful of bands that were accepted in the early 80's that actualy came out in the 80's. I remember putting in a Quiet Riot cassette at a party and having it smashed and tossed around with the tape ending up everywhere. If you hung out with the older kids (you know the ones that could get you booze and other fun stuff) you had to listen to 70's rock or you were out of luck. At home I had my room decorated with Metallica, Slayer, The Scorpions, Iron Maiden, and Judas Priest, etc. Like I said some bands were cool, some were not. You could get away with Dokken, but not YNT. Some punk was OK others no way. Iggy or the Sex Pistols the Ramones you were good to go. Circle Jerks were hit and miss, the Dead Kennedys maybe, Black Flag was usually ok. The Subhumans or Bad Brain not so much and don't even try and play The Beasty Boys, you could get beat up for that.

Most hair bands would get you dirty looks or tossed out but when grunge came out thinks actually changed. I think people were just ready. Now pop is still pop and is shunned by most rockers the world over. The metal shreads harder than ever. The punk is harder but more produced. There are even some good rock bands like Buck Cherry that actually make it in the pop world.

As you can see, good music was kinda scarce that year! So I tuned out the radio and listened to Boston, Kansas, Heart, Jesus Christ Superstar and Alice Cooper.

We had a new space shuttle program, HBO still had 'Intermissions' instead of commercials, Pac Man still ruled, rotary phones were on the way out, and the disco look left us girls with BIG shoulder pads and BIG hair... The guys too, actually...
