Using the same diameter coil 28ga requires more wraps to get the same ohms...in this case 1.7 than 30ga will. Due to it being thicker and requiring more wraps 28ga will take longer to heat up and get to temperature which is referred to as lag time.

28ga is fine for 1.7 if you aren't having issues with it heating up quick enough but if you do want a more responsive coil 30ga will help. I usually do 28ga for my lower 1ohm builds, 30ga for my upper 1ohm - 2ish ohm builds and 32ga above that.

TEMco would be my choice to get it. You can get 50ft or 100ft rolls from them for what most vendors charge for just a few feet. They sell both through their website and Ebay.

It's exactly that, lag time. I have a kfl clone and a russian 91% authentic. Both are 1.7, both are wicked the same, but the coil on the kfl heats up a good 2 to 4 seconds quicker than the russian. I've taken the coil off the russian and put it on the kfl and it works great on the kfl. I dunno what's giving the russian the lag time but I figured I'd try 30g on it and see if it helps any.

I have the Provari. I prefer my Kayfuns at around 1.3 to 1.5 ohms for them. I like 28 gauge for the added surface area. More suface to the kanthal equals more vapor to me. May not heat up as fast, but when it gets there I like the flavor. It's a matter of personal preference. Also, the thicker the Kanthal, the longer it lasts before needing to be replaced, and 28 gauge seems to be just right for my dual coil, sub-ohm drippers as well. Makes shopping simpler.
