In my experience, a couple things can happen. First, the coil can go for a long time and the cotton over tie starts to produce the burnt taste or a single incident could introduce the burnt taste.

The other thing that happens is the coil itself gets gunked up. With sweeter juices, this happens more frequently. The flavor doesn't taste burnt, but it's muted and the vapor production isn't there.

Either of these cases call for a new coil.
