It's not 501 - it's 510

Made by different companies
Different gender
Different threading
Cannot use each other's stuff without an adapter
There is a lot more stuff for 510 - more brands of atty, tanks atty + tanks, more different kinds of cartomizers
The standard 510 batteries have a nice PCC that works with manual batteries (PCC at NoSmokeVA)
510 manual batteries are totally sealed metal on the threaded end so very very safe from damage/death by juice leaks

Both are short charge life, neither can use low resistance attachments

My personal 2 cents having owned both the 510 (and 510-t) and 901 is to go with the 510, for the above stated reasons and the 901 had a harder draw. It really turned me off to use it at the time. I would only use it in non smoking places on very long trips. I am finding it much easier to inhale on the 510 while playing with tanks, cartomizers, and regular carts and atties. Good luck!

901 has an airier draw and cooler IMO than the 510.

510's have more available along the lines of goodies to try out.

You can use any battery with any type of atomizer/cartomizer as long as there is an adapter available like dormouse stated.

Most people start with 510's because parts are easier to get.

It depends on you...what do you want?...warmer vape? (510)...lighter draw? (901)....tastier juice? (either model).

I tried 901 atomizers on my KR8 manual. What I didn't like: there are now some kind of plastic supports inside the coil compartment. If you twist the atty on a bit further than necessary, instead of stopping or giving resistance to turning, the barrel rotates a bit around the threaded end. That can rotate the air intakes on the side of the atty barrel to be right over the plastic supports, blocking the airflow. I also did not like that the coil compartment is so closed off that it is very hard to clean (for me anyway). And I didn't care for juice dripping out the side of the atty barrel. Also I don't think any of the 901 nice plastic cig-pack-look PCCs support manual batteries.

510 attys - don't even know. Don't really use them. I use a Joye 306 standard resistance atty on 510 manuals w/ a 306 drip tip for testing juices and sometimes just for vaping flavor I like occasionally. The 306 atty is easy to blow out and seems pretty easy to clean. 510 and 306 threads are the same. 95% of the time I am using Boge standard resistance 510 cartomizers on the 510.
