I started with a Dragon 401 and after all the hype about the 510 on this forum I bough a kit from Cignot. My question is have any of you experienced vaporers that have tried multiple devices find the 510 to taste like total crap?

I gave it fair shot and tried it out for a couple of weeks and was really turned on by the PCC and the manual batteries (this was before the manuals came out for the 401) because I got caught at a very loud concert that was setting off my auto 401 batteries and another time at a bar when both of my batteries went dead on my 401. I just cant get past the terrible taste of the 510 though.

The vapor production and throat hit is a little better on the 510, but the taste is WAY better on the 401 and vapor and throat hit arent bad at all either.

Anyway I just wanted to get other peoples opinions and experiences between the two. I`ve read the posts on how to make the 510 taste better and break in and all that, but none of it seems to compare to the 401 imo.

give the atty a good cleaning... blow it out from both ends, then pick your cleaning technique

if you want pull out the filler under the bridge, when it burns it keeps the nasty taste
But some people have lost atty's that way. my guess is that they broke the wound wire under the bridge when doing it. you can see the wire in the base of the atty, just stay away from it when you dig out the filler.

And keep the atty moist.. that will help tons..

A 510 is all I have tried, but I can say that not all atty's perform the same.

I have some that give better flavor than others for sure, so as you did not state if you had tried more than 1 atty, I would suggest trying at least a few before giving up on the 510.

If you have tried several and its not working out for you and you are looking for similar device with nice flavor perhaps a 901 might work as I hear ppl say they have good flavor.

Nah its not the atty as I have tried 2 different ones. I actually think its the thin tips that come with it. It is kind of a plastic taste, I dunno its weird. The tips for the 401 arent as thin so I dont get that taste. I have trimmed the tips and tried the PTB mod, but it still tastes the same. I`m gonna try different suggestions and not give up on it, but it sure has made me appreciate the 401 more.

I dont think I`ll get a 901 as the reviews seem similar to the 401 except more juice capacity. JD at Truesmoker is working on a design for the m702 so if I get anything else in the near future it will probably be that just for the PCC and cool looks.:)

Sometimes I think your first PV is like your mom's fried chicken -- you think that's how it's "supposed to" taste, so everything else gets measured by it. Maybe once in a while you find something you have to admit is better, but that first experience imprints on you, like a baby duck imprinting on the first thing it sees.

My first vape was a 510, and I've tried the 901 and 801 (at 3.7 and 6 volts), and they seem like a pale imitation. If I'd started on a 901, the 510 might seem harsh and nasty compared to the "smooth" 901 that I'd see as how vaping is "supposed to" be.

Saints, I have experienced the dreaded PLASTIC taste in my 510, and for good reason...My carts melted.

I also tried trimming the cart as you can see in the pic below:

Top: Stock cart.
Bottom: Trimmed cart.
Right: Trimmed off slice with the melted spot on the top.

At the time I did this (2 weeks into using my 510) I had thought I was aligning the carts propperly with the atty. It turns out I had been aligning it the opposite way that it should have been the entire time, more on this latter.

After using the trimmed cart for a week I was testing a new atty and another I had cleaned, and a third I had been using with no problems. At the end of vaping on the 3, I noticed a plastic taste, pulled off the cart and discovered a HUGE notch burnt into the side of the trimmed cart.

After that I just cut off the entire end that goes intot he cart up to the air slots and just use that cart for dripping.

But that made me reconsider and research the correct cart alignment.
I had been aligning the rectangle of the cart to fit across the bridge

IE if the bridge is shaped like this - and the Cart is = then I had the minus sign inside the equals sign, which is wrong.

There is a = shaped opening below the bridge that we should align the carts shape with, a pic from a cart mod thread best illustrates this:

Click to make it bigger so you can see it better. (TY Eclypse for the picture in your great mod thread!)

See the white ring below the bridge and how it matches the shape of the cart, this is how I think they should fit together to avoid melting carts :)

I dont know how Eclypse was able to get such a good pic of the inside of the atty, it is so clear in that pic, when i look at my atty's here I cant really see past the bridge! (this explains why I had been doing it wrong!)

I am hoping this might be the source of your problem and the solution. If it is not, well I tried

Get rid of that nasty PolyFill and replace it with a PTB or better yet get rid of the cart altogether and drip. IMO 510s were made for dripping.
Try it and Im sure your opinion of the 510 will change.

On my 510 I only use the drip method. I found when I used a cart liquid would accumulate in the end of the cart and did not taste very good. I don't use a filler in my carts, I just drip all of my liquid onto the atomizer.
i do the same as martha! i dont even use carts... tailpipe'n it

When I started dripping I did the "tailpipe", but during a "chain vape" the atty got hot and I burned my lips

So I took the rubber ergonomic grip off an old pen and stuck that on the atty.
So much better. It also gives my lips/teeth something to grip.

The fiberglass wick under the bridge gets burnt crap trapped in the fibers, hence the burnt taste. If you hold the atty batt side down under a gentle stream under your kitchen faucet the force of the water combs the fiberglass wick and washes out the burnt particles and should get rid of the burnt taste.

I dry burn my attys about every 5 days hold the button down till the whole coil glows orange to burn the deposits off of the coil, but in doing so it traps alot of burnt crap in the fibers. When you wash it under a faucet you can smell the burnt smell in the air as its being washed out of the fibers. I find if I dry burn at first sign of burnt taste then wash and dry over night, its like a new atty all over again. Not all attys are created equal and I've had some just taste like crap with no luck so ymmv. Just sittin the atty in hot water wont have the same effect as washing it under water with force behind it. I hope this helps happy vaping. If the atty is on its last leg the coil wont get to the orange state and its time for a new one.

The 510 takes a little time to get used to. First you will need to do one of the cart mods to get the cart breathing right. The 510 atty likes to stay moist. If you run it lean you may scortch the wicking material and it is hard to get rid of the burnt smell. It's not the 510's fault you just ran it too lean.

If you are melting the flat side of the cart you are not inserting the cart into the atty aligned properly. The curved edges of the cart need to be aligned with the white coil bowl. It is that white retangular thing under the wick bridge. It is opposite of what you would think. If you align the cart parallel to the bridge you will put the flat sides of the cart too close to the coil. The coil gets very hot and if the cart is too close it will melt. Don't trim the cart because you will mess up the air flow.

Stick with your 401.

I've used both models that you mention & I have to agree.

The 510 does give a (marginally) better throat hit & vapour (initially) but this soon beds in & tails off on both aspects.

Battery life on a M401 is also better than on the 510 (unless you get the Mega battery from TW or TECC, & even then it only equals my lesser performing M401). I see you have used cignot, may I suggest you try the 401s available from them (the EVO). I use primarily EVOs & I have to say they are by far the best M401 I've used (closely followed by EastMall's EM4) IMHO superior to 510s in every way.

I got my 510 titan, liquid, atty's and filters from 2 different places...Only problems I had at first was priming the atty's. Once I figured I had to drip them they worked fine. you are supposed to clean the atty's and drip them after cleaning. My favorite method is using the blue filter cap. I get the most vapor, taste, and kick using the blue fluval.
