I've been reading a bit, and I notice a LOT of people prefer the 510 atties. I have yet to try one, and I'll probably be ordering one in a short while. I have tried the e9's (greensmoke and red dragon style), and a blu, and I now run strictly kr808's. does the 510 impart that much more flavor and vapor?

Perez-uzza to this day
510 has more vapor on its standard battery. I direct drip a KR on a Prodigy at 5 volts and have found it produces as much vapor as my 510 on the Prodigy. My 510 is in the bag I call "the retirement home" waiting for an emergency of some kind to bring it out of retirement.

Flavor is noticeably less on the 510. I do think the 510 is the best of the normal atomizers (i.e. not a cartomizer). Doesn't mean I use it anymore though unless I want to try a new flavor without filling a new cartomizer.

Vapor - yes. Flavor? Enhances some, subdues others. Stronger flavors do well with the 510 - tobacco, coffee, capp., flu cured, cigar, french pipe. Fruits, berries, lighter flavors are better on a 801, 901 and some cartos. It's function of the resistance of the atomizer. Some juices taste better warmer, some don't.

On this subject I found 1.50 per cartomizer
Blank Cartomizer for KR808D (Single- Bulk) - $1.49 : Zen Cart!, The Art of E-commerce
It's the best priced cartomizers I have seen yet. At that price plus they do free shipping on orders over $14, it really does make those fairly disposable and almost still cost less then 510 atomizer 1 for $8. I say almost because of I have read quite a few post saying their 510 atomizer has lasted like 3 months, and extreme cases of it lasting 7 months.
Once you get into those time frames the 510 is better economically speaking, but for short term the KR8 vs 510 prices seem more competitive then I once thought.

Assuming you have a 510 battery the cost to try a cartomizer is really cheap

Like I listed above there you can get the cartomizer for $1.50, and the adapter is $3
901/510 adapter - $2.99 : Zen Cart!, The Art of E-commerce

that's $4.50 you will want the order to be over $14 so you get free shipping so you can add some more cartomizers and/or juice and you're set.

edit
opps, thats the opposite adapter then you want, but either way the price should be fairly low.

On the other hand unless your 510 power source is a mod I would suggest getting a KR8 battery or PT with results from scotty's battery test you will probably be more satisfied with that kind of battery then a standard 510 battery.

The auto cutoffs on all but the KR8 XL is more significant than battery power in this case. So recommending KR8 without specifically recommending the XL can be a bit misleading. See this:

http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/fo.../64170-search-perfect-e-cig-8.html#post971681

Hope you haven't made the same mistake by focusing on costs and voltage :) Auto cutoffs on manual batteries simply doesn't make sense. The whole point of having a manual battery is for you to take control of the sequencing rather than being the effect of a chip on the battery.

Auto cutoffs are followed, in many cases, by 'time outs' to where the battery doesn't work until after a certain time period - the idea of course is to 'save the atomizer' or in this case, cartomizers - to keep them from burning your lips - something that isn't that hard to do because the casing, unlike the 3 piece, is one unit to where conduction is immediate, whereas the plastic cartridge doesn't transfer the heat.

There's more factors involved in these decisions and that is why sometimes it's just best to get the cheapest 510 kit to have something with which to judge that is a straight forward manual ecig where you're in control - ie. no cutoffs - and you don't have to worry about the wide variations in cartomizer's tastes, vapor and longevity. And as you've pointed out - you can get an adapter for them later IF you want to try them out.

Both standard batteries seem to have their pros and cons, that's why my first choice when it comes to portable e-cig power supply would be a mod.

True, but you know that you were heading toward a mod ;-)
Not all new members know that when starting out, and imo, there's nothing more annoying than a battery cutoff and time out, in the middle of a good vape. To me that trumps all other considerations - I don't care if the oem batt acted like a 5 volt, lol.

as far as cutoff goes, I don't notice it with the vaporkings standard battery, and the mega (XL) battery has like a 10 second cutoff or something ridiculous. I have a USB passthrough, and I've gotta say that a kr8 at 5 volts is damn amazing! I'll be ordering a chuck here in the next coupla weeks, and I'll be getting the kr8 adapter for it for sure.

I didn't get the mega batts for the 510 and I like vaping so much that I can't get them charged fast enough. They also have a nasty habit of crapping out without much warning after too little time and I get a slug of hot ejuice. I would have ordered better batteries from the get go instead of wasting my money on the standard ones. Just my little cross to bear until my next order for a better MOD gets here. LOL

The best way to handle 510 batts (if you're in a situation where you can do this of course) is to yank them off the charger as soon as the light goes green - iow, change them out even sooner than you have to. Again, you'd have to be somewhat in the same area as the charger but you're not going to be that far anyway if you're vaping so much. This lengthens the life of the battery - I haven't lost a regular 510 manual in over 7 months - and you're getting the best charge out of them right off the charger.

Do that until you get megas and then do the same with them too.... When you can. Going to a mod - well at least a 14500 batt mod - is then the final solution. And even then I still keep my bartlebys hooked up to the charging cable until I'm ready to split, whether at home or in the car.

I had the VK 280mAh batt. I don't know if or what the cutoff is for the regular batt but someone just reported a problem with the kit batts. The XL seems like it shouldn't be a problem at all. But I'm not one of those video lung inhalers ;-) and I was still running into the cutoff on the KR8 280mAh and I didn't get near the longevity with that one as I did on the 510 mega which gave me another 1 1/2 to 2 hours. But the chuck will solve all ;-) and the KR8 adapter is fully worth having.
