60/40 PG/VG + 5% water... apply water as though it is VG in calculations?

I know there are DIY ejuice calculators out there, but decided to create a simple one in Excel that can handle adding water as an ingredient. When I compared my results to some of the others, I wound up having a question...

If I am shooting for 60/40 PG/VG and 5% water, I was told by someone to apply the volume of water as though it was VG. Is that a normal practice, or is it 'normal' to get 60/40 based ONLY on PG and VG content?

Thanks

ghh3rd, I also just made my own spreadsheet and had the same thoughts as you when I made it... The answer is that it varies...

The xml sheet stickied here from scubabatdan e.g. takes the water percentage only from the vg, but others dosen't...

Before I made my own, then I used the stickied one, and I changed it's water logistics to make it based on the total and not just vg.

Many people only use water when they have high vg, as a thinning agent and not for it's boiling-point lowering abilities, so that's why some calcs make there water processing like that...

Most calculators use the formula: PG% = PG volume / (PG volume + VG volume), VG% = VG volume / (PG volume + VG volume). They ignore the non PG/VG ingredients.

Example:
45ml PG
45ml VG
10ml water
PG% = 45 / (45 + 45) = 50%.

The juice Calculator has a setting that allows you to calculate as described above or: PG% = PG volume / Total volume of recipe
Example:
PG% = 45 / (45 + 45 + 10) = 45%
VG% = 45 / (45 + 45 + 10) = 45%
Although PG% + VG% doesn't equal 100% it is a true reflection of the percentages of PG and VG.
