Just a short thread to remember those lost on 9/11, which still feels recent (for me) despite the passage of years. At 9:59 AM the first tower collapsed. I'm posting this just minutes before that first collapse that changed our lives forever.
Yes, never forget.
The world changed that day. I miss how we, as a nation, treated each other in the months following.

Every generation has an event that made the country step back and causes us to remember the time and place where we were when it happened.

For me, although I was a bit too young (4th grade) to understand the full consequences, it was John F Kennedy's assassination. When 9-11 happened, my kids were the same age, and I told them that they would remember this day for the rest of their lives. My daughter is now 23 and she recently told me she didn't understand the consequences of 9-11 at that age, but she remembers what I said and agreed that she will remember that day for the rest of her life.

Our daughters are a year apart ( mine is 24). As I sat watching the first tower fall I was in the phone to my ex who grabbed my daughter from school to get out of the city. No one knew what would come next. She still remembers how scared everyone was around her.

We visit the memorial about once a year. After it happened I simply could not go to that scene again, even during the years of construction. I simply could not see it, while unable to stop seeing it in my mind. On a personal level my very first office was at 5 World Trade Center, one of the smaller buildings that surrounded the towers. By that time I had moved my work to a different area of the city, but it struck home my strong ties to the area all lost.

It was the seminal event of our generation, and is a dividing line our history of our world pre and post 9/11.

Never Forget that day or the people we lost and are still losing, what a tragic and senseless loss. Also remember all the brave people who put themselves at risk to do what they could to help.

Brewdawg1181 said it best "The world changed that day. I miss how we, as a nation, treated each other in the months following".

If only we could find half of that spirit of togetherness the world would be a better place.

Peace

I volunteered to assist with the efforts in re-establishing trade businesses in dt Manhattan. Arrived in NY a few days after the event. At that time, transportation south of Canal Street was forbidden and you had to walk through the inches thick layer of dust that caked the streets. Seeing the event unfold on TV was shocking to say the least. Standing at the corner of Church and Liberty, feeling the heat from fires and smelling the air is something that I will never forget. Many times, especially when clean up efforts stopped to honour the dead, did I struggle to hold back strong emotions.

It was the most stressful time I ever had to endure, and there were times I felt like packing it in. But I stuck it out, and glad that I did. Lived in NY for about a year continuing support. Met so many loving and welcoming people, some of which will be friends for life
