I volunteered to assist with the efforts in re-establishing trade businesses in dt Manhattan. Arrived in NY a few days after the event. At that time, transportation south of Canal Street was forbidden and you had to walk
through the inches thick layer of dust that caked the streets. Seeing the event unfold on TV was shocking to say the least. Standing at the corner of Church and Liberty, feeling the heat from fires and smelling the air is something that I will never forget. Many times, especially when clean up efforts stopped to honour the dead, did I struggle to hold back strong emotions.
It was the most stressful time I ever had to endure, and there were times I felt like packing it in. But I stuck it out, and glad that I did. Lived in NY for about a year continuing support. Met so many loving and welcoming people, some of which will be friends for life
