I've been using a 901 for about a month and I just got a 510 today. Now I've only been vaping with it for a few minutes so far, but I already noticed some big differences. At the moment, I'm using the same liquid in both (18mg).
Flavor
The 901 wins, hands down. The 501 gives me just a hint of flavor on the inhale, with nothing detectible on the exhale. The 901, however, hits me with flavor both ways.
Throat hit
Though it's not consistent with it, the 901 wins. When I'm using my bet atty and my strongest battery, I get a great throat hit. Sometimes, though, I get very little. So it can be a bit frustrating that way. In the few minutes I've been using the 510, I've gotten zero throat hit. What the 510 is giving me instead is an incredibly dry throat.
Vapor
The 510 wins easily. Of course, I'm working off a brand new atty and freshly charged battery on the 510 at the moment, but from one puff to the next, I'm getting a larger volume of vapor; I'm getting it more consistently than I ever do with the 901 and I'm getting it with ease. A smaller, lighter drag is giving me as much if not more than my 901 on it's best day.
So it seems I'm in line with the general consensus that the 901 is better for flavor and the 510 is better for vapor. I'm not sure where people come down on the throat hit (seemed more divided on that), but I find the 901 better.
Here's an interesting thing I noticed: The 510 actually gave me a bit of a head rush. That's the first head rush I've gotten since I started vaping! It's not the same as what you can get from an analog, though, so it wasn't pleasurable. My head just felt weird (still does, actually, since I've been vaping in excess for this comparison
).
I'd probably like the 510 better with a flat tip on it, but I certainly don't dislike it it any way even with the round tip I'm using on it now. It's a nice change of pace and I think I'm going to enjoy switching off between my 901 and 510. If I was only going to choose between them, though, the 901 would get my vote. I love my 901
