Hey guys, I've been told by a friend what he has ordered me for Christmas and I need your help with it.

He has essentially ordered me:
Production Dripper Kit by Flawless

Now, I'm currently running on a eleaf iJust 2 and have been getting the nice gentleman at my local vape store to build and fit my new coils etc, I've just started looking into doing it myself and its interesting but as a person I get quite terrified of doing stuff like this myself for fear it might blow up or something :)

Anyway, I appreciate my friends gift, its a really nice product and I've checked out a few videos of people using it and it appeals to me, I don't want to not use it, but I feel like this is an advanced product.

Can someone run me through what kind of maintenance this thing would need, or just literally anything I need to know about using this kind of thing. I need all the help I can get.

Thanks in advance :)

Below are some basics

Reading Materials
Coiling Calculator
  • Steam Engine
  • If you are interested in learning more about how to use the "Steam Engine" check out many of these great blog posts by ECF member State O' Flux. <=link
Wire
  • A1 Kanthal - Many different gauges available. I use mostly 26 gauge for resistance around 0.5Ω. The above coiling calculator can help you decide what gauges would work for you.
Wicking Material - Take your pick
  • Organic Cotton Balls
  • Rayon (Cellu-Cotton) - Sally's Beauty Supply
  • Japanese Cotton Pads (Koh Gen Do/Shiseido) - Sephora/Nordstroms - I use these.
Other Tools
  • Ohm Reader - MUST HAVE
  • Coiling Jig (not necessary BUT very handy) and/or Accessory Screwdriver Set (can be used to wind coils and tighten post screws.
  • Ceramic Tweezers (not needed but nice) or Tweezers
  • Needle Nose Pliers (to squeeze the coils together nice and tight)
  • Wire clippers and/or Nail Clippers (to clip the ends of wires)
  • Scissors (to cut cotton)

Hiding up a tree
That is a good friend!
You may want to buy an Ohm meter, or just build on your Eleaf (if it has a resistance reading? IDK).

The main thing is making sure that when you build your coil it is at a decent resistance that your battery can handle. (Current draw)

I have not heard of the battery that comes with the set, but I am pretty sure that it is not what it pretends to be (35A CDR batteries do not exist as far as I am aware), so you may want to google the battery to find out what it actually is (probably a re-wrapped 20A CDR battery) before you use it.

It is good to see you here researching so that you can use it safely when it arrives! Kudos for that.

Deep end... o_O

I've been vaping for six years and I would not use that mod.

That is a hybrid topcap mech with no top vents.

That battery is junk.

The RDA is meh.

I'm sorry to badmouth your gift but I would ask your friend to return it.

Indeed, this is not a device for an inexperienced user. Arguably, it should not be used by anyone, but certainly not by someone who doesn't know the ins and outs of the direct-to-battery family of devices. Vaping is safe enough, if you know what you're doing, but if something is going to blow up in your hands, it's gonna be this, or something like it.

[Edit - additional info]: Mechanical mods have no safety features besides (sometimes) a locking mechanism on the button, to prevent it from firing while in your pocket or purse. There is no short-circuit or low-resistance protection. If you build too low of a resistance, you can overtax your battery and cause an explosion.

Make sure to only use good-quality batteries from a trusted vendor. I recommend the Sony VTC4, but there are others that will work just as well. Buying from a trusted vendor like Illumination Supply (illumn.com) or RTD Vapor (.com) is essential, to avoid counterfeits. Never trust a battery from eBay or Amazon, as it's too easy for a shady vendor to slap a different-colored wrap on a sub-standard battery cell and call it whatever they want. Additionally, specialty vaping batteries like the "Sub Ohm Cell" in that kit are nothing more than rewrapped reject-bin batteries from one of the few major manufacturers. There is no way to know what the actual battery cell is underneath that wrapper, and so there's no way to know what its capabilities are and stay within its limits. It's best to stick with batteries made by Sony, LG, Samsung, or Panasonic, and avoid anything by Efest or with "fire" in the name (Trustfire, Surefire, etc.) as these are re-wraps as well and they all overstate their capabilities. There is no such thing as a 35-amp CDR 18650 battery. If something states it is a 35-amp battery, that is either the "pulse" rating (a useless figure for our purposes) or an outright lie. Check out @Mooch's blog for the results of his personal bench tests on several different battery brands and models.

"Hybrid-look" or "direct-to-battery" devices like that one have a whole 'nother set of problems, as well. You must, must, MUST ensure that the atomizer's 510 positive center pin extends well past the negative threading. If the negative threading contacts the battery's positive pole, you've got a hard short and probably an explosion. Additionally, if the positive pole becomes dented through over-tightening of the connections, you can have a short even with a protruding center pin. These devices are nothing to f**k around with; do more research, know exactly what it is you are getting yourself into, and if you're even a little bit wary of using such a device (hell, even if you're not), trust your instincts and don't use it. Better safe than sorry.

that mod is a mech mod.
based on what you said, don't use the mech mod; for your own safety.

You could use the dripper part (the part that goes on top);
the nice gentleman at your local vape store can make the coils for you.

If you want a " my first dripper setup" this is what I recommend

Evic VTC mini + Velocity RDA + LG HG2 battery.

Good little mod, easy to build RDA, quality battery.

I am still flabbergasted that anyone would buy that kit as a gift to a beginner.

If you want it, replace the battery with a vtc4 or a good 20A battery like a Samsung 25r. The battery that it comes with can probably be used in your regulated mod though.

The atty is made to pair with that mod though, so should work safely together. However, its always a good idea to check it once in awhile. And definitely watch some videos/do some reading on safely using a direct to battery ("hybrid top") mod.

^This. It's a well built hybrid mech, but they are dangerous. Don't ever put a tank on that mod. Take it to the vape shop and let them show you the dangers. If they don't give you a stern warning about how unsafe it is, don't let them touch it either. Most of the stories you see n the news about mods blowing peoples faces off come from inexperienced users with this type of mod.

EDIT:  I neglected to open the link and see that the RDA was attached to a hybrid mechanical. I was thinking the OP was gifted just a RDA and was going to use it on his iJust battery.

There seems to be some confusion regarding the iJust 2 or maybe I'm just confused. official eleafworld.com - eleaf ijust 2 starter kit

Although it is not a variable v/w mod, it's not a true mechanical.

  • Internal 2600 mah battery
[*]Short-Circuit Protection: When the resistance is less than 0.15 ohm, short-circuit protection kicks in with a white indicator light flashing 3 times
[*]Low-Voltage Protection: when voltage is below 3.3V, white indicator light will flash 4 times
    [*]Over-charge protection.
I can't find the amp rating of the battery but since eleaf sells 0.3Ω kanthal coils for the iJust 2 tank in their kit, I would assume it is around 20A. The 0.15Ω coil they sell are NI-200 for using the iJust 2 tank in a temp control mod.

Given this, what advise would you give the OP (and help educate me)? How is this mod any different (from a safety standpoint) than other regulated mods (and the Ego ONE)?

Northern NJ native , Coastal NC now.
Your friend doesn't happen to have a huge life insurance policy on you does he ?

Seriously though , friends tend to think what they like their friends must like , not the case as your posting shows. I am not familiar with that mod but if your not comfortable with it then your not comfortable with it , a gift certificate would of been a better option.

No offense but why would someone buy anyone a gift like that? Does he use one himself and not know the dangers?

If I were you I'd be nice and accept it but then I'd probably stick it in a drawer to collect dust.

Maybe they're not as close as he thinks they are, lol

Well, I'm not one to automatically tell people, "No! You shouldn't have it! I must protect you!" (Sound like the FDA?)

People can learn how to use it safely. The ones who ask and want to learn can and will. Its the ones who don't know they should or won't I worry about.

So, OP, if you want this, we can help you. If you don't, I think you should be honest and tell your friend you aren't comfortable and would maybe prefer a high power regulated mod right now.

Hes using theiJust2 now. The gift is in the link. The iJust 2 is basically a mech with a kick built in.
This is the gift.

It's a hybrid mech paired with an RDA. That battery in the pic is crap. And there are ZERO vent holes on the mod. It's a pipe bomb waiting to go off.

Seriously though, do not use that until you know what batteries are what, how to build coils yourself, how to know when a battery is getting low, ohm's law, how to use a coil calculator and how to use an ohm meter (own one). I have no idea what battery is in that kit but if they make a point to say sub ohm, it probably ain't. Go watch every video about battery explosions as well, then after doing all the above, if you are still comfortable, go ahead. I'm not trying to be rude but that thing can make for a bad new year and I almost only use mechs. Be safe and study a lot.

since he already has the ijust2, and his friend has already ordered this mech and rda for him, my advice is to avoil the mech, and use the rda with his existing ijust2 where he'd get basic short circuit protection.

Guys in all honesty, thank you for all the advise, warnings etc. I will take it all on board and I by no means intended to jump straight into using it.
I really appreciate the help and no, the reason he bought it I assume (because he doesn't vape) is because he must have gone to a shop in his area and just asked for higher end things like this.

Ill be sure to look into it a lot more and if there is anything else I need to know then please feel free to post it here.
Still making my way through a lot of what's been posted, but thanks to all who replied. It's nice to see people prioritise safety.

I think, I'm going to look into it. I do want to use it, but I am not going to even think about that until I'm educated.
Although I'm not too sure where to begin, baring in mind I have a month before its even in my possession so nothing to worry about for a while, and as I say, even when it is in my possession its getting put away until I know its safe.

My first question then is.. what are vent holes, what do they do? I assume batteries either get hot, or release some sort of chemical.
