I'm the proud and happy owner of a new Joye 510c, and so far it is the freaking bomb, but I'm having trouble finding the answers to some questions, and I thought I'd just get them all out of my system and hoped someone might be kind enough to answer some or all of them...

  • I've started to notice a faint burning plastic smell to some of my atomizers, some worse than others, but it's overpowering the juice flavor, and harsh in a bad way. I've got really bad eyes, but squinting at the wick side of the atomizer, I see what I think is the inner wick material sticking out the open side of the metal arch a little bit, only it's dark brown instead of clear. Could be built up juice, but could it be burned inner wick material? Is it normally partially visible out the side of the arch?

  • What's the correct orientation of the cartridge relative to the atomizer wick when pushing the two together? I'd assumed that the widest part of the cart with the rounded sides should go the same way as the metal wick, so that the flat sides of the cart line up with the open part of the arch. Does that sound right?

  • Are there any wrong ways to clean these atomizers? I've read in general about rinsing them under hot water, boiling in a pan, blowing through the battery hole, soaking in Pepsi, etc., and wanted to make sure there wasn't any reason not to use any particular method with the 510 atomizers. I blew a couple of them out the other day to get a bunch of gunk out, not sure if that might have blown the inner wick out too?

  • What's the trick for dripping with these things? I'm coming from a 401 and can't hit the wick to save my life due to the sleeve around it, and end up with liquid coming out the battery seam, and little to none turning to vapor. I know the battery is sealed so I feel pretty safe, but I don't want to burn up the atomizer by dripping but not getting any liquid actually on the actual thing itself.

  • When topping off a new cartridge, I notice there's a depression where the metal wick from the atomizer pushes into the cart material. I've been pulling this back out a little with tweezers, since I want to make sure it makes contact again when I put it back on, but that's also freeing up some fibers which I'm pretty sure are in turn getting stuck to the metal wick (maybe because I let the cart dry out too much? )and then heating up and making not-good vapors. What do you do with the stuffing when topping off or refilling, if anything?

  • Any advice or care and feeding tips for this thing, apart from what is normally recommended for most any ecig?

Sorry for puking these all up at once, but if I'm doing something stupid that's hurting these atomizers I want to stop before I kill them all... also, figure this might make a good sticky if we can get a dedicated 510 sub-forum set up... :)

Thanks,
Tim

I have the Dura which I think is the same as the 510.

the burning can be minimized if you blow the atomizer out
onto a napkin before your done vaping for the night.

also keep the cig vertical as often as possible so juice
doesn't gravitate down into the atomizer.

if you feel a bubbling sensation in your atomizer on puffing,
its flooded.

if that helps.

I think you should have two manual batteries? The manual batteries are sealed. You can drip on them.

Do not, under any circumstances drip on the auto one, if you have one.

You are burning up your stuffing. Replace it! Go and buy some Fluval fish tank filter insert things, cut them up, insert more stuffing.

Do not forget to stop pressing the button on the manual switch. Nothing good will come of this.

It does, thanks! So, do you get a burning plastic taste with a flooded atomizer, or more kind of a burned juice taste?

Now that I think about it, I tend to hold the 510 with the battery side down, since I keep my finger on the button and ready to vape... I'll be a little less lazy and turn it around... :)

Okay, will look for those, I'd tried some poly fill from a craft store with a 401, but got the plastic taste really bad even right after putting on the cartridge, so decided not to use it anymore.

I've been pretty cautious for the most part, but may run a little long from time to time... what exactly happens when it runs too hot or too long, does the atomizer die completely, or can it do this burning plastic taste thing?

Clean the atomizer in either coffee maker cleaner or ice machine cleaner. There are threads on this. Of all the methods, this one seems to generate the most positive feedback :)

Got it, thanks for the tip, I'll search the forum for more details, I just wanted to make sure there was nothing different about these atomizers as compared to others...

Seems like when I try to drip, the liquid rolls off the metal mesh and pools at the bottom without soaking in... does it matter if this happens as long as the atomizer is cleaned regularly?

Biggest question I have at this point is which direction the cartridges are supposed to be installed - the 401 carts are round, so nothing to think about, but with the 2 flat and 2 rounded sides on the 510.

Unless I can figure out the definitive answer, I'm going to wonder if whatever problems I might have are caused by installing the cart in the wrong direction... in fact, just got a penstyle from PS and have a similar dilemma, so I searching the forums looking for the answer to either, but apparently can't come up with the right search terms... :(

I align the atomiser so the arch is parallel to the long side of the cart when I remember. It doesn't seem to make any difference when I forget though.

Okay, thanks... most I've heard from also say it doesn't seem to make any difference. The only reason I'm paranoid is because of that funky taste to most of my atomizers now even with a fresh cart, but I guess I'll go ahead and let it go... :)

My 510 is my favorite model. Several things I've noticed:

They put out a lot of vapor. This means they use more juice than some other e-cigs. If you are getting a 'burnt taste' it probably means your carts are running too dry.

I don't drip on the auto bats, but dripping on the manuals is easy, you just center your bottle over the top and let a drop or two go right down the center. If you miss a bit, no worries, it vapes everything in a close proximity.

Before you top up your carts, take a pair of tweezers and tug the stuffing a bit and bring it back up to the top of the cart. Add a few drops (but don't 'pool it').

Only hold the button for a split second before you inhale. Release it right after you have finished your inhale.

Don't draw on it like a tank. It hits really easy and overpulling can give you a burnt taste because you are not allowing it to vaporize naturally. Go easy on it and it will go easy on you.

You cannot install the cart in the 'wrong' direction. There, your mind is at ease.

On the auto bats watch the LED closely right after a draw. Sometimes, usually right after topping a cart, it will stick a bit. If it stays lit for more than a few moments, unscrew the battery quickly. That is the only nag I've had with mine since I got it. I now own 4 510s and love them all. My favorite bat is the manual, but you do have to understand that they operate differently internally and vapor production and taste are different also.

Blow your atomizers out at least twice a week. I used to do it every night, but I then realized I was wasting 4-6 drops of nic juice. If they need more cleaning that that, you can try a multitude of suggestions already out there, but be careful - atomizers for these babies are a bit more expensive than the 901s.

Never carry any pv battery side up for very long. Vaping in bed, unless you are sitting up will likely shock you wide awake with a nice drop or two of nic on your tongue.

After all of that, if you feel like throwing it away, just send it to me. :)

KreeL, this is really great stuff, I hope you don't mind but I'm going to cross-post it as a separate thread in the Joye 510 model-specific sub-forum, since this is exactly the type of information I was looking for when my 510 was on its way to me...

If you do mind, let me know, and I'll delete it!

Great info Kreel! Are any vendors selling just the manual battery? Can some of the more experienced here post some vendor recommendations on where to order parts from? I plan on ordering a backup or two as well. Thanks!

Try smokesafe.com and look under Yeti(another name for 510) James sells both manual and auto batteries plus atomizers. He is also running a sale right now (I just ordered several). Is superfast and good product.:)

You can try Electronicstix.com, Jason is also getting manual 510 batts with LED's soon.

I don't mind at all, Tim. I am sure that when you get it broke in, you will agree that the 510 is one pv that you will likely enjoy more than any others. I absolutely LOVE the control batteries. You can get spare parts from The Smoke Safe (also carries the white ones), Janty, and Electro-nic-stix.

Until something better comes along, - for me it's the 510 for life, baby. :)

Well, I'm not that experienced, but I've bought 3 510 kits so far from Monique (The Widow) at:

Widows Bead Work - E-cigarette Store

... and she's been incredibly helpful and patient with all my questions, has the best prices I've seen on kits and parts, and ships fast and free. Unfortunately it looks like she's out of stock on 510 kits and atomizers until the end of April, so not much help to you right now, but might be later...

Since the question comes up a lot, I started a list of 510 parts suppliers in the Joye 510 sub-forum, in case anyone else reading this thread needs to find one:

http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/joye-510/13434-510-kits-parts-suppliers.html

And based on the feedback here and from messing around with my 510s I've come up with a couple of probably theories for my burnt plastic/chemical fume taste problems - either I really am letting the carts run too dry before topping off or swapping them out and once the fill starts heating up the stink stays with the atomizer for a while, I'm getting stray fibers stuck to the atomizer mesh possibly as a result of the first problem, or part of the clear plastic inner wick that's sticking out the side of the atomizer mesh arch is burning up but eventually gets to the point that it's as charred as it's going to get and stops fuming for the most part.

I had 4 atomizers in various states of chemical, plastic, burning, soapy tastes and smells at one point, and dripped liquid on the atomizer to puff through the taste without a cartridge repeatedly without inhaling, alternated with letting them sit and soak with a couple of drops of liquid, and for the most part I think they've all finally recovered.

Oh, I already do, this is very much my dream ecig and even with the trouble I'm having I can't imagine finding anything better overall. I just received a penstyle that I can see using a lot at home and in the car, but the 510 has that perfect storm of portability, vapor production, and consistency with fewer points of potential failure that I've been looking for since I started vaping.

I also really enjoy the manual control, I'd seen that as something of a sales gimmick to counteract the initial problems with the automatic battery, but I do like being able to hang on to that drag for an extra second or two, just because I can! :)
