I remember my first pull on a vape e-cig. I ran into an old friend at my 25th class reunion. He had this device, looked like a pen, and said I had to try it. He must have smelled the lingering odor of cigarettes on me and knew that I still smoked, maybe was even interested in quitting the nasty cig's. It has been 30+ years of cig's and yes, I'm so tired of them and the smell. And the cost. So I tried his device as he told me all about it. There was a band playing at the reunion, to which we were sitting fairly close to, so I only heard a little bit. I tried to follow him. I took my first pull on the device and inhale a nice, smooth mixture of cucumber and mint. I inhaled. I exhaled. I fell in love. He told me where to go to get setup with it, even wrote the address down on a piece of paper for me. I took a second pull on his device and again, loved the feeling of how smooth it was and could tell I was getting a hit of nicotine. We parted ways and he made me promise that I would go check it out, telling me I would never regret it.

Well, that was back in July and just last friday finally found a place to purchase my first vape e-cig unit. I had lost the piece of paper and could not remember what it was called or where I should go. I tried contacting my friend on facebook, but no response. I tried contacting other friends for his number, but no one apparently had it. Strange. So, sometime last month I finally found the place he was telling me about and I went there to check out the vaping and to get some of that cucumber-mint nicotine liquid. But they were sold out of everything. I put my name and number on a long list of people that were also waiting for vape e-cig's. A few weeks past and they called. By the time I made it back in they were already sold out of everything AGAIN!! So, duh, I googled 'vape' in my town and came up with 2 other locations. I checked out both places and finally decided on a CE4 top-coil unit as my first vape e-cig. By this time, I was desperate to get away from the cigarettes!! Since beginning of August I had been fighting a nasty sinus infection and it was lingering on and on and I just knew it was because of the damn cigarettes!! The coughing and excess phlegm was driving me nuts and the fact that I continued to smoke just did not make sense! And I kept remembering back to July and the time I ran into my friend and trying the vape e-cig he had, I wanted that experience again...and again. So, I bought my kit and picked out some juice, Watermellon Rush, and went home to get busy with vaping and leave cig's far behind.

But this was not to be. Now, with this ce4 unit, the pull was anything but smooth! It made me gag and cough violently, felt like my throat was closing off and cutting off my air. My throat became so very raw! I did not understand it! I became frustrated and depressed that maybe, just maybe, vaping would not work for me. What a bummer that would be! I've been trolling and lurking on this site, reading everyone's comments about how much they love vaping and all the reasons to switch from analog to e-cig benefits...what was wrong with me? So, finally last night, I made it back to the store and told them 'it just does not work for me'. They said maybe the juice was too harsh for me. So we tried numerous other juices and everything went smooth. So, I picked out a different juice - no they did not have cucumber-mint!! - and then they added nicotine to it, just 8mg to start with. Then I hesitated before taking a pull on the e-cig for fear of the raw throat again and the violent coughing attack, I did not want that again! But then I took a pull/puff and immediately my throat became raw and I started coughing hard!! ...??? WHY is this happening? Could I be allergic to the nicotine? But then the young, but wise, vape clerk said "wait a minute, try this one" and screwed on a different kind of tank to my battery, a bottom-coil unit and ala', that was it!!! I got a nice, decent pull on the e-cig with no coughing! The clerk said maybe it was the top-coil and that it was so close to my lips and mouth that it was probably just burning up my throat!

So, anyway, I'm happily pulling/puffing away today on my e-cig today with absolutely NO throat problems. Well, I have a bit of coughing going on, but I think thats more due to the LACK of smoking and all the phlegm built up in my lungs from the sinus infection and past smoking. I dont know, but thats my thoughts on it. OH, on the way home last night I stopped at the vape store that was all sold out of units and bought some cucumber-mint 18mg liquid. I have not tried it yet, but will soon as it is after all my first vape love! I cant wait to run into my old friend some day and tell him - THANK HIM - for turning me on to vaping!! I'm very happy about it and so far have cut down, way down, on my cigarettes as I start vaping more!!

If anyone has any thoughts on what could have caused my violent coughing attacks and raw throat, I would love to hear it! Also, sorry this is so long, but I wanted to include everything involving my vape love story!
Take care!

Sounds like you burned your wick and got a nice nasty dry hit. This can be caused by over tightening the atty, bending the wire and creating a hot spot, or vaping before the wick was saturated and you were vaping silica more than juice. When you vape an atty dry or it is not wicking properly, one gets dry hits. Sometimes they are very nasty. Really nasty. hate vapping cotton, it's nasty. Welcome to the learning curve, sometimes it's just nasty.

I was like you when I first started vaping in that I could not tolerate high nicotine liquid ... it also made me choke and cough violently, and I have ranted plenty about it on this very site. My journey was kind of backwards compared to most other vapers in that I had to start with zero nic, and slowly work my way up. I vaped 6mg for the longest time because that was all that I could handle, but at the same time it wasn`t enough to get me completely off ciggies.

Eventually I went up to 12 mg, and sometimes to 16-18mg, which helped me finally quit cigs. The formula that worked for me, which may work for you is, I use 6-8mg as my all day vape, and then I have a couple of flavors at 12, 16, and 18 mgs that I vape only when I really need a bigger nic hit (usually when someone, or something is stressing me out :p).

I know that most vaper adjusted to the high nicotine juices quicker than I did, usually a few days from what I have heard over the years ... but that just wasn`t the case for me, and may not be for you either. So try low nic for most of the day, and save high nic for when you really need it, or when you finally adjust to the major throat hit you get from it. It`s the intense throat hit that is making you choke ... best of luck to you, and I hope your vape journey continues in the most pleasant way possible. :)
