I found this page today that lists the total TSNAs for various tobacco products.

SMOKELESS TOBACCO AND ORAL CANCER: A REVIEW OF THE RISKS AND DETERMINANTS -- Rodu and Jansson 15 (5): 252 -- Critical Reviews in Oral Biology & Medicine

The section on snuff caught my eye. They list four American brands of dry snuff that have levels ranging from 41 to 1219. Does anyone know if these figures are accurate? They seem very high if they are.

On the snuson forum I found a post by Toque Snuff who state their TSNA levels are 2.95 which seems much more reasonable:

SnusOn.com - Snus Forum :: View topic - Nasal Snuff

I'm just wondering what your opinions are on this. The first set of figures could just be inaccurate, Toque could be making false claims or there may be widely different levels found depending on the brand and/or country of origin.

What do you reckon?

I've done little research on snuff, but I've seen the same figures. Not sure about accuracy, that's probably the range. Snuff TSNA's do vary widely, American scotches being the most volatile in every way. I prefer the burn and nic hit of scotch, but my usage is irregular and low, so I don't worry about the TSNA's. But even at that, these snuffs have been used for hundreds of years and used to sniff, not lip, adverse health effects are missing. I see no problem in steady usage, everyday use.

Here it is

These two were retested and here are the levels taken from the second test. Looks like someone screwed up.

Red Seal: NNN-3.7; NNK-0.8; NAT-1.3; NAB-0.2; Total TSNAs-6.0 Bruton: NNN-5.6; NNK-2.2; NAT-1.9; NAB-0.3; Total TSNAs-10.0]

here is the link to the chart
SMOKELESS TOBACCO AND ORAL CANCER: A REVIEW OF THE RISKS AND DETERMINANTS -- Rodu and Jansson 15 (5): 252 -- Critical Reviews in Oral Biology & Medicine

at the bottom is another link that takes you to the report, this is where they show that the two above snuffs were retested.

Ha ha - the answer was on the very site I was looking at in the first place. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction dgriego. Those revised figures look more reasonable. Regardless of how long people had been doing it for I would have been disinclined to put something with TSNA levels in their thousands up my nose.
