Hello everyone, like most others in this section I am completely new to the world of personal vapes. Tried my first ecig yesterday and now I'm considering switching all together. But the amount of possibilities out there seem staggering! I joined the forum to find information to help guide me in the right direction. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hi Chiups,
It will help to know how much you smoke. Do you smoke every day? What size ecig would you be comfortable with?

I'll put a pic below showing some sizes next to a cigarette. You can click on it to make it bigger:

SI comparison.jpg

The three on the right are X2s, what are called "Ego size" batteries, and last from 9-13 hours before needing a charge. Same size as a cigar or sharpie pen. The ones in the picture are available from Smokeless Image. You can refill the end pieces, called cartomizers, with these.
There are other options too - just let us know what your looking for right now.

Yeah it is really overwhelming at first, but thanks to this forum, I personally have learned more than I ever thought I would. In fact, enough that I am almost 7 months without a real cig. I'd suggest anything "eGo" as kiwivap suggested as well. Ego= the battery you will be using. From there, you can choose cartomizers, tanks, clearomizers, etc. Those are the things you use to fill up with nicotine juice. With a little research, and a little luck you will find the juice that you love. That is the hardest part :)!

Just my two cents:

I found the most pleasure in dripping, and by using RBAs. No doubt there. It's the closest I've ever come to the correct sensation, and to having the nicotine delivery system work for me.

And while RBAs can be quite expensive, and difficult to acquire, a decent 510 atty with a driptip is fairly easy and quite cheap to come by.

But as already stated, find out what works for you... Yes, there's a bit of a cost to it, especially if you start to really try out different stuff, but to me it was money well worth spending :)

I also really like RBAs. If your mechanically inclined you may want to give them a shot. There are cheaper ones out there now like here. If you look around enough you can save yourself a little money. And dont be afraid to ask about a product you are considering buying because chances are at least 100 members on here have used it, if not more :)

To be clear, its the three on the right that are X2 eGo size batteries. (leftie loosie, righty tighty )

Welcome to the wonderful world of vapor. Cigarettes may have been addicting but so is the vapor hardware when it comes to variety and wanting to try everything :)

My advice is pick out a well tested hardware, though i'm not saying go buy a $200 provari right out of the gates. Read around the forums about nicotine strength so you can get a good estimate on where to start. I've seen alot of people give up on vapor because they started at 4mg and it wasn't enough for them.

Thanks you everyone for the advice and encouragement. As far as quantity I smoke about a pack/4days. I've been trying to cut back even more than that thats why I was very excited to see such a vibrant ecig community. With the little reading I have done, I see that many are recommending eGo's as the way to go (no pun intended) for beginners. Is this so?

If the choice is between the eGo sized batteries and the cigarette look-a-likes, then YES. Minimum 2 batteries, fixed voltage vs variable voltage.

The eGo batteries will be offered in 3 - 4 sizes. The mah rating approximates the duration of battery usage. 100 mah = 1 hr.
The shorter of the batteries will be 600 mah (6 hrs), considered convenient for outside the house. The longer 1000 mah will provide roughly 10 hours of battery time, perhaps more useful at home and the longer length making it less portable.

Thanks Baditude! I'm not opposed to going for a larger battery as I hear they are generally a better investment overall. Any specific names come to mind that I might look into?

if money's no object, a provari is the standard bearer in terms of performance and quality. though no matter how many more big battery mods i may buy, the provari is always there as my standby 'cause i know it will work time and again.

to start I'd say keep it simple, (2)ego twist 1000 variable voltage, Boge 510 cartomizers (2 five packs), a couple chargers, and some juice from a good vendor like Halo, Nitelite, Rawr, Back Woods Brew, (Alien Visions is also great but with the 100% VG it's very thick and sometimes doesn't wick well) and you're good to go with cheap, quality stuff as simple as possible. If you want some links let me know, you can start really cheap when you're not flailing around spending money on all kinds of junk like I did!

Thanksso much! Ive noticed that everyone has been praising the ProVari, but I think Ill hold out on such a large investment until I have a more solid base.

This is pretty much what I think I will be going for, though I need to now research the Boge 510. I had originally had a Mini Vivi Nova in mind. How would you stack the two against each other? And thank you very much for the juice sites, that was gonna be my next line of questioning.

This forum is a bank of knowledge and the members here will help you through this if you'll let them.
For now? You need to R-E-S-E-A-R-C-H. Thats all there is to it. Do not impulse buy. Research.
An eGo kit will be perfect for you considering you only smoked a pack every 4 days.
I have seen people that smoked around that amount be happy with the (higher quality) cigarette look-alikes. That is your decision.
But it sounds like you will be perfectly happy with an eGo.
There are different brands of eGos. Joye was the original maker of the eGo.
Some say Joye is the best.
That is debatable. I own a smoktech eGo, which I truly enjoy.
RESEARCH.

VOLTAGE- Voltage is, in laymen's terms, the "power" your cartomizer will receive from your device.
Then there is the cartomizer's resistance, which is also known as ohms.
LOWER ohms are better for lower voltage. Higher ohms are better for higher voltage.
eGos stay around 4 to 3 volts from full charge to discharge. You'll want low-ISH resisted cartomizers. ;)
2.0 ohm cartomizers are a good starting point for eGo devices.. no lower no higher really. 2ohm is ideal.
You can search "cartomizer resistance" a little later to find out what the hell I'm talking about later. lol.
RESEARCH.

Higher mAh = longer times between charges = bigger battery = bigger eGo.
You'll have to make a trade off. Size VS functionality. Bigger mods can feel awkward for some.
This is your choice and your choice alone. I personally like to have different sizes at my fingertips.
As a beginner, you need to pick a size that you'll be OK with because it will be your ONLY device for a while.
RESEARCH.

In my opinion... The 400mAh eGos are a novelty. They look awkward to me.
If you want a 400mAh device you may as well go with a VOLT or a BLOOG honestly.
(the VOLT and the BLOOG are 3.7v REGULATED cigarette look-alike devices)
But if you want something that will last longer than 3 to 4 hours, start at 650mAh eGos and above.
My 900mAh eGo lasts me around 5-6 hours I'd say. This is not a precise figure.
You'll have to............
RESEARCH.

Do you want VARIABLE VOLTAGE? Do you even need variable voltage?
Do you even know what variable voltage is?
Its probably foggy to you. Variable Voltage devices give you the ability to push the limits of your cartomizer.
With VV devices you can turn up, or dial down the voltage to match your cartomizer or atomizer's ohms.
(remember, ohms = resistance)
But VV devices are bigger. A 900mAh eGo battery is around 3 inches.
a VV 900mAh eGo will be around 4 inches.
The Variable Voltage IS worth a look at.
you'll enjoy using your VV eGo bats into the future of your vaping.
RESEARCH.

Joye, Smoktech, Vision, Riva... these are a few brands of eGos.
Joye was the original. Many say its the best quality.
VISION is regularly said to be the best variable voltage eGo by people who's opinions I respect.
I like my Smoktech eGo, but it is NOT my #1 PV. Your eGos will be your main PVs. Pick wisely.
Joye is a durable and tried and true brand, IF you've got the money. They are typically more expensive.
RESEARCH.

If you realize you MUST have a cig-alike, BLOOG and VOLT are the best. I just ordered a VOLT kit this week.
There will probably be times when you'll want a cig-alike.
You can entertain ordering one VOLT battery from SmokelessImage.com for those times.
For eGo batteries, I'd recommend going for a different company. Thats just me.
The eGo batteries at SmokelessImage (rebranded as "x2" batteries) are of HIGH quality though.
RESEARCH.

Other than thatttttttt.............
A cartomizer is what came with your Blu. They work well. People love em.
You can upgrade to a cartomizer tank someday, you'll flip your lid. <3 em.
An atomizer is a cartomizer without the capacity to hold juice.
Atomizer- You drip 2-3 drops and take 2-3 puffs, then redrip.
Cartomizer- You fill up with 20 or so drops and your set for a while.
Atomizer- Better taste, vaporizes each drop more efficiently, giving a stronger hit.
Cartomizer- Convenience.
Atomizer- Can last 2-3 months honestly.
Cartomizer- Can last 2-3 weeks if your lucky.
CLEAROMIZER- A cartomizer you can see through. OR, a cartomizer with no filler material. The juice is sucked into the wick via air pressure or tassel-like wicks.
Carto Tank- A tank around a cartomizer with punched holes in it's side.
In Carto Tanks, the juice is sucked in from the tank, through the hole in the carto.
Cartomizer Tanks are freaking awesome and they changed my life.
Clearomizer Tank- Same as a fillerless clearomizer but bigger. Most known: vivinova.
Rebuildable- A rebuildable atomizer. You can buy wire + wick and repair these urself.
Some rebuildables have tanks. These are usually above a n00bs head.
RESEARCH.

I hope I've helped in some way, even if only a miniscule way.
Thanks for reading. Enjoy the journey mate.
