I know that everyone up and down the chain recommends Noalox to keep the firing pin clean in our Reos. But heres my question, Noalox is for keeping aluminum electrical connections clean and lubricated. Is the pin aluminum? If so, would copper provide better performance? I know that copper is a better conductor but would resistance be affected which may in the end cause additional problems? Or is it possibly a maintenance issue that aluminum is used?

Not at all worried about this but just curious. And when your nutz being curious causes sleep deprivation :(

Thanks for your answer Robert, I can understand why spring steel would indeed be a better material than copper because of its ability to flex better in turn providing a better contact point. But because steel is perhaps you might say not as compatible with aluminum as one would like, there will be a tendency for aluminum oxide to form. For some of you who haven't realized, Noalox is short for "no aluminum oxide". And because of it viscous nature needs to be reapplied periodically. Sanding would eventually wear out the firing pin since its already quite thin, making it difficult for me to recommend. Finally my curious nature about the firing pin is put at ease. I will endorse the use of Noalox as well. But another question I have would be the application of Noalox on the battery's spring, would it be beneficial there as well or overkill?

Use very sparingly. Too much of it over time can make button get sticky especially making button stick down position with older fatigued firing pins that have lost springiness. It's hard to put just a tiny dab on tip. Early on I used way too much and had to disassemble to clean out area and button on a few.

Robert had suggested at one time that it might be good to put a little Noalox on the screw holding the spring in place. That is where it would be useful since the REO itself forms the circuit.

Thanks all who replied, to be sure all very good suggestions. Does anyone who has multiple Reos, notice that one which has had no to very little use lately be more problematic w/ Noalox than a frequently used Reo? Since Noalox is considered a paste, there will be a tendency to retain dust/loose particles so again we see the "less is more" concept being true.

For Noalox users, be careful about inhalation. The little dab that we use should be no problem but don't go opening up the bottle/tube and try smelling the stuff, it can be a health issue. Skin contact should also be washed with soap and water.
