My guess is that during the tank install/removal that a short internally to the device occurred. The olive oil was just an innocent bystander. So the Spinner just decided to go out with a bang instead of a whimper.

My friend and I are waiting for our fancy Subox Minis in the mail as I write this, so it's off to bigger and better mods I suppose.

True, but lower smoke point could have caused smoking leading to panic and throwing of the mod.

Yeah just make sure there is no olive oil on the seat belt.

the centerpin insulator probably got damaged making a short likely.
adding the oil probable softened the insulator material further, leading to the short.

Next time, tell your friend to clean the threads using a q-tip and a little PGA. Routine maintenance for all "dirty" threads on any tank.
