I am considering purchasing a Reo Grand or a VV Reo Grand and would like some advice on which model to select. I have no experience with Reo’s in particular or bottom feeders in general, currently using a Provari paired with the kayfun as my main hardware.
I am looking to try something different and have read the multitude of recommendations on the Reo’s paired with the Reomizer 2.0 rba.
Price is not the main consideration although it does factor into my decision. I am considering purchasing the basic Reo Grand over the VV Reo Grand partly for reliability sake; I understand the non VV version has no wires and therefore should be a more long-term investment. I am hesitant however to purchase a device that will not allow me to adjust the voltage even though I understand I would adjust my coil builds to compensate for the lack of variable voltage … I have a Silver Bullet that rarely gets any use for this reason though, so I am a little undecided on which Reo to choose.

Anyone have any thoughts on which of these devices might be the better choice or if there are other considerations that might be factored in when making my decision?

Thanks.

I have both. I would not be without either. If I could only have 1, it'd be a grand, cause there's less that can go wrong, but any serious vaper should have ATLEAST 2 REOs. Reliable Backups are key in the war on cigs. Once you vape the REO way, NOTHING else will ever do.

Get both or start with a grand. Or just get the VV. either way, you'll be back to get the one you didn't get originally :)

Here's my take on a VV grand.

1 it's size is great. It's slightly taller than a grand but the same width. I use it mainly at home or if I am taking a ride in the car (like to pick up the kids from school) and don't have to worry about pocketing it. It fits my hand perfectly.

2. The button placement is perfect - trigger finger.

3. The way the button fires is superb - it's done thru electronics so it is either on or off (no firing pin / spring / moving positive contact).

4. No noalox required since the contact doesn't move.

5. The batts last a long time. I vape at a very low setting but also rotate mods though.

6. Every hit is exactly the same right up until the stacked 18350s die. Hard for me to explain but since the chip operates on the combined voltage, the batteries still function perfectly all the way down to each battery hits around 3.7 volts. So even at when they are depleted down to 3.7 each, they are still capable of pumping like 7.4 volts! Try vaping a battery depleted down to 3.7 on your grand - it's starting to taper off once your battery is at that point right?

7. There is allot of space inside the mod for bottle access ease.

Here's a little video of a grand under the hood setup style :)

The part of Canada that doesn't get enuf Snow :(
If your unsure get a grand. I wouldn't be without mine or my mini 2.0. As you alluded to yes you can adjust your vape with the coils. Show us pics when you get it. No pics means you don't have a Reo

My vv never leaves the house unless I'm going for a long drive and if I am it stays in the truck. My grand doesn't get much use but my 2.0 mini is my out and about work mod. They all have there place.

Welcome, Baddog :)
Tough call. I'm rather fond of both.
I think I would recommend the Grand first. that way you can see how you feel about the mechanical properties first. then if the voltage drop is too bothersome, you could add a kick.

 but then again...I'm rather fond of the whole tune to taste action on the VV.

ya, but what does an Okie know...lol
I personally have zero interest in a VV mostly cause i don't want the extra weight or carrying more batteries then i already do. Go grand it's easy to use and easy to sell if you decide it's not for you (not likely). And if you like it and still want a VV the grand will make a rock solid backup to have.

I have no need for VV--at the resistances I vape at (0.5-0.8Ω), there's so much vapor I don't notice a decrease until about 3.6-3.7 volts, and then it's time to pull the battery. Maybe I'm subconsciously compensating with longer/stronger hits, but it isn't an issue for me. Battery swap happens after as much as a 16-hour day for me (24 mg... don't need to hit it as often and 6 ml is a perfect match). No need to carry spares, but I do put a washed and juice-primed disposable LR atty in my pocket change when a coil gets some time on it.

I recommend the mechanical Grand with RM2 for its rugged simplicity and smaller package. Wash it in the sink, drop it in the pool, shuffle across the carpet in the dead of winter and zap it while reaching for it... it'll never be the worse for it. Get a DIY rebuild kit with your order and you'll be set for many years (along with an additional hot spring or two, a couple of spare RM2 post screws, a couple of spare RM2 o-rings, and some extra bottles). Get one of those two-battery plastic cases for each of your spare 18650s and put a spare 6 ml bottle and some cotton in with the battery. That's my long-weekend setup, although these days a second Grand/RM2 comes along.

Once you have one REO, you will have another.

I'll jump on the Grand bandwagon. I've vaped both vv and vw, and the sheer simplicity of the mech can't be beat. Adjust your vaping level to your preferences through the coil you build.

People often tout the ability of a vv to keep the output current. This is true, but the cutout is very sudden. With a mech you quickly get a 'feel' for where your battery's at. In other words, you know when you're Grand is about to say 'change me, please'. This will give you time to get a new battery, and you can compensate by taking longer vapes.

I just find the Grand to be more... uhm... 'organic' in a weird kind of way :)

ymmv, of course.

I might have a Reo in my future, and considered the same choices (and more).
But I think I'll maybe get the Grand 18650 first. :Black wrinkle/mahogany :toast:
I can kick it with an 18490 if I want to test VV. :vapor:
If I NEED VV, then I'll maybe get the VV Grand :hammertone silver. (maybe, but after the 2.1:Orange, however, maybe, before the 14500 mini:silver/Red, unless a woody pops up)

Good luck
Have fun

RM2 goes without saying.

It sounds to me like VV is pretty important to you and your main concern is the long term reliability of a VV device vs. a mechanical. I have not heard of any complaints about the reliability of the VV Grand. Since variable voltage is important to you, that's what I would get. Odds are you will get years of reliable service from the VV Grand and if something should go wrong you can always send it to Rob for repair. From what I understand turnaround time on repairs is pretty quick.

One other thing... If you get one and don't care for it, you can sell it in the classifieds and get most of your investment back.

Every person should have at least two non-VV REOs before they get a VV IMHO :)

I'm all about the reliability and you can't go wrong with a Grand.
I've had 2 VV-Grands and sold or traded both of them, I just don't need VV like I used to.
I do have a VV woodvil that gets used every day though, but thats because its just soooo perty.

Just as an aside, I don't have or really want a VV. Main reasons are: 1) I don't need VV since I can adjust with the coil in the RM2, and 2) I don't want the hassle of stacking/pairing batteries. And I truly love being able to pull the RM2, bottle and battery, then run it under warm water in the sink to clean it. :) :) :)
