Well, after a day of puffing on the Alcatraz I was quite dissatisfied with its performance. I figured before I gave up on it I would break it down, clean it up and rebuild it hoping maybe there were some bad contact points or something...

First thing to note about this mod- it's not just 3 or 4 pieces screwed together. The main body is actually 15 loose rods and 3 threaded rods holding together a base plate and top ring. I assumed (like a dummy) that there was some magical force that would hold the rods in place to make reassembly easier. No luck. It took at least 45 minutes to put this thing back together. And if you don't have patience it may NEVER make it back to one piece.

Second thing is the switch. I've always preferred a side button to a bottom button so I was happy to find this one. However it can't be easily disassembled for cleaning or repair. There is a small light inside the button (one more thing to break).

But after cleaning all the ends of the rods and screws and finally getting them aligned into both the base and top ring and cleaning to parts of the switch I could reach and cleaning the 510 connection it finally hits as good as my hammer!

So on the one hand I hate how difficult this thing was to put back together after cleaning it up. I hate the switch assembly.

But on the other I LOVE the look of it! And I love the position of the switch and now that it's hitting hard I love vaping from it.

Guess time will tell which side is more important, though I have a feeling that switch is going to be the weak point.

That's what I figure. Google didn't have much to say about it and there isn't anything on ECF about it. I was starting to get worried that it was a crap mod but after cleaning and re-seating all 40 or so contact points it IS a winner!

Im glad it's not popular. It seems it is possible to get an awesome unique "original" mod for under $50.

The thing I see people complaining about with most mods is the threads. They are buttery smooth and the unit really does look like a quality machined item. It doesn't feel like a cheap flashlight like some mods I've played with. Granted the weight isn't anywhere near my hammer but it still feels good.

Today I am much happier with the Alcatraz. It's been hitting like a champ! And it's gorgeous!

After a few days with this mod I really don't like it. The volt-drop is insane - doesn't hit anywhere NEAR as hard as my hammer except for a brief time after I disassembled the entire thing. It's good enough to run some of my old tanks but sub-ohm is out of the question. When it does manage to hit well the bottom plate gets pretty hot.

Overall I would not recommend this mod to anyone. Really not satisfied in the least.

If you decide the appearance is enough for you FT has them for half the price AND you can get it in several different colors.

Anyways. It'll be going into a drawer somewhere. Not sure I'd even want to give this one away.

Well, I contacted vapor beast about this mod and they are exchanging it for a a king clone, something I'm sure I'll be happier with.

Customer service also said they would update the description "even though it looks like a mech, it's not capable of running RDAs"

It really is sad though. I still think this is a very sexy mod.
