Hello all, this is my first post on the forum, but I've been lurking a bit for a couple months. I started vaping over cigs about three months ago. Started with a cig-a-like, then got an eGo style, and recently bought an Aspire CF Sub Ohm battery and Atlantis tank. The Aspire hits great, and the flavors are much better than the eGo was. I feel like there must be something wrong with my battery though. It seems to die way too quickly. If I charge it over night, it seems to last a couple hours, maybe three. A few times I've tried to charge it for an hour or two, and it seems like it will only last maybe 10 or 15 hits. Could I be over charging the battery, or maybe my battery is just a dud? Or do these batteries always die this quickly?

Hi DiAmoroso!

Welcome to ECF :D

You are not doing anything wrong. SubOhm. as you probably know; is a resistance lower than 1.0

Lower resistance means more current can flow through the circuit with less restriction. This puts a higher load on your battery and it will discharge faster.

Hope that helps!

You may want to have a spare battery on hand so that you can swap and keep going.

Thank you, I thought that might be the case. Is there any problem with me charging it whenever it's not in use? For example, if I'm at work, could I plug it in between breaks to maintain maximum charge with out over charging and compensating the length a charge will hold?

Nope! Plug it in whenever it's convenient. Lithium batteries do have a max cycles before they start degrading (might be 1,000) but partial cycles put less wear & tear so it can be many more. Though 10 hits seems like a really low number before needing a recharge to get adequate vapor...

Here are the specs on it...Aspire - Aspire CF SUB? Battery

They do make a statement to fully charge before using...which is a little bit cryptic.

I still think you might want to get a second one and let one fully charge while vaping the other one.

First rule of fight club...wait no...LOL...vaping. First rule of vaping...always have backups. :D

Hi DiAmoroso and welcome to ECF :)

The thing with charging a battery is to charge it until it is full. I don't have your battery, but I think you're using a eGo charger which has a light on it that will change color when it's finished, correct? If so, always charge until the charger says it's done. I also don't let my charger run overnight. If the charger goes bad and doesn't stop charging there could well be a fire.

Now, charging the battery overnight should really charge it fully. To be sure of that, check to make sure the charger is saying it's done. I checked with the Steam Engine battery drain calculator. With a full charge, a 2000 mAh batt used with a 0.5 ohm atty should last you about 166, five second puffs. If it's significantly less than that there is something wrong with either the charger or the battery and I would get in touch with whoever I bought them from and tell them the story.

Hey Rye :)...he has a new subohm battery with overcharge protection but they say " Always charge the battery completely before using." ref: Aspire - Aspire CF SUB? Battery

ETA: I never noticed that calculator in the Steam Engine BTW. Thanks for pointing that out to us.

I have two Aspire Sub Ohm batteries powering Atlantis Sub Tanks, and either of them will easily last me all day. Something's not right if you're only getting a few hits. You might make sure you're eGo charger is a genuine Aspire unit ( it will have Aspire plainly visible on it). A regular eGo charger could not have enough recess to clear the edges of the larger Sub Ohm battery. Make sure the light on the charger head is glowing red/green, and also make sure your battery "fire" button is glowing. If that all checks out, you probably have a battery problem.

OK so the thing I missed here was the 10-15 hits depending on how charged the battery was when the 10 to 15 hits occured. Since the specs say operate on a full charge maybe that is a factor but I have to agree with you guys. The OP is not doing anything wrong BUT the battery might be defective....

Thanks for the replies. I think my chargers might actually be the problem. I have three eGo style chargers, and I think only one of them is working properly. On two of them the red light is still on after a night of charging, but the third one will actually turn green after several hours. I didn't think much of this until you pointed that out, but I also took the battery off the good charger after only about an hour on it, and I've actually been vaping it pretty heavily over the last hour or so.

I'm definitely considering buying a second battery, but I haven't yet decided if I should get a second Aspire Sub Ohm, or if I should get a mech mod with a couple of 18650 batteries. I wanted to avoid the mech mod route due to everything I've read as far as their dangers, and I have no experience with that at all. I didn't realize the Aspire was a fire hazard as well, I was under the impression it was a safer alternative to the mech mod batteries.

Not sure how much the subohm batts are but I can tell you that for 99 dollars you can get a good regulated mod that fires subohms....these are on sale because there is a new hot model now but this is still a little workhorse and at a good price....Vapor Shark DNA Batteries and Accessories | VaporShark.com

That one supports down to 0.5 ohms and is pass-through so you can vape while charging if needed.

I like the small form factor too. easy to throw into a pocket...or in my case a purse...

The Aspire battery is a regulated product, so it SHOULD be protected from both over-charging and frying due to the wrong ohm level pulling more than it can produce. I say SHOULD because anything is theoretically possible, I suppose. It is intentionally designed with those safeguards in place. Regarding mech mods, there are several regulated (not pure mech) box mods available with chips that allow variable wattage, voltage, and even temperature shutoff if using the proper coils ( nickel wire, for example). Some can be had for around $100 or maybe less, and of course some will cost two or three times that. There's a lot of options out there, and this forum will provide you a lot of info and insight.

Yup, the red light on that charger after it's been on overnight is not a good sign. See how it goes with the other charger now that you are aware of this . With a pretty discharged 2000 mAh batt and a 420 mA charger, it could well take about 4-5 hours to fully charge.

I'm definitely considering buying a second battery, but I haven't yet decided if I should get a second Aspire Sub Ohm, or if I should get a mech mod with a couple of 18650 batteries. High power regulated mods perform better than mechanical mods and give you more options to boot. Plus there's the safety factor to think about. If I were starting out today, it would probably be regulated all the way for me.

It's not that the Aspire battery per se is a safety issue, all batteries if overcharged can burn. And the difference between a fire and an explosion is the speed of the burn. Cell phone batteries, laptop batteries, all of them will burn if something goes wrong and they are abused.

Welcome to ECF, DiAmoroso. You seem to be in good hands, so I just wanted to say hello and welcome. All this battery stuff is a pain, I knew nothing about any of it when I started last year, but there's some great smart people around here, and nice ones! The dangers of ALL batteries are no joke though; all that energy, in that tiny little thing... it's not a pretty sight if it all comes out at once. :D
