I tell my doctors I quit smoking? I planned on just saying I haven't had a cigarette since May 12th. I wasn't going to tell any of them I'm vaping.. but I feel a little sleazy about it. All 3 of my docs are on me really bad about my smoking, so of course they will be all.. Oh that's great! Congrats on stopping. and I will feel pretty bad. Mainly because I haven't suffered in the least..Just happily vaping away.. ha ha But seriously, should I just not tell them I'm vaping? And what about insurance companies? My husband pays a lot more because I smoke. Can he change it to non-smoker now? What would YOU do??

I would say i quit smoking cigarettes...you don't have to tell them anything they you don't want to. Some ins companies allow you to register as a non smoker if you vape, but others consider it smoking. So it depends on the company legally. Would i lie? Yup. It's a stupid technicality.

You absolutely should tell your doctors you are vaping.

"I switched to vape"

Thank you all.. I would have felt pretty bad if I didn't tell them all I'm vaping, especially my cardiologist. I hate my nephrologist, so I think I'll just tell him I had my last ciggie, May 12th and leave it at that.As far as insurance goes,Petrotech is right..I wouldn't want to get caught in a lie. That could backfire and get pretty costly.Roxy, I agree. I guess I just get so peeved when they bug me about smoking but you're right. I shouldn't hide it from them. I guess I was thinking that they would be clueless about what vaping was.. From the sounds of it, they will know at least something about it.Thank you all so much for your advice and input!

Not lying at all if you mentioned that you have replaced your analogs with a vape. I would highly recommend you bring it up to your doctor(s) and see what their input/take is on it. As well, I don't think myself or anyone else on here is familiar enough with your medical history to let you know if it is a good idea to omit this information from a medical practitioner. For all we know, you could have been told to quit smoking due to adverse effects caused by nicotine and yet you are vaping at 24mg's of nic.

A bit of a longshot, I know. Just want to make sure you have all your bases covered when it comes to your health and vaping. ;)

My doctors all know I vape. Its important not to hide anything from your doctors. And they get pretty frustrated when patients do because what they're hiding might be important.
I couldn't agree with this more. It is absolutely imperative that you are open in honest with your doctor/doctors. It is your health we are talking about here. How is the doctor able to treat you properly if he doesn't know about you? It's a risk I'm not willing to take.

when I quit smoking and started vaping I talked with my DR about it and he was very supportive even though not much was known back then but we both did research and we speak quite often about new research he actually tells all his patients to switch if they don't stop smoking all together at least vape. He has even had me speak with other patients when he couldn't answer their questions. Your DR's always need the truth as good ones don't judge just help.

I use the Phrase/Term "Tobacco-Free".
Not at all because I am ashamed or scared, but de to the abject ignorance, Stupidity, confusion, and Greed of those who are too lazy or ambivalent to educate themselves.
Also, those same deluded (whether sincere or voluntary for their own selfish motives) Individuals still choose to castigate and lump us in with the "Evil Ones" for various reasons anyways.
Case in point,,,, After 2 years of smoking cessation, my Life Insurance Policy states that my Rates will decrease to the same Level as a Non-Smoker thus cutting them in half or same Premium and twice the Coverage.
However, that's a TON of cash over the year(s) they stand to lose even thought they pretend they want you to quit. So the .......s have decided that Vaping and Vapers are thrown in the same Category as Smokers so we continue to overpay and they continue to be the richest Corps in the World.
I can't go back and change my proclamation of Status unless I switch Companies which would raise my Premiums as my Age has obviously increased since Policy Inception.
Bent over backwards, rode hard, and put up spent with an empty wallet.
From what I have heard, the previous is now Standard Insurance Company SOP. Health Insurance as well although I chose not to repeat the same mistake with the Health Insurance Company when my Employer switched last year.
It's ALL about the money and/or someone else feeling better about themselves at the expense of others regardless of truth or validity.

P.s. Remember, now that Health Insurance and all related Insurances are under the Benevolent and Loving Umbrella of the Feds, your Records (regardless of HIPA) are all on Big Brother's Database and shared with The Insurance Companies.... Tell one Doc, he puts it on your Record, They All know.
I tell everyone I smokes for 30+ years like a chimney and now have been Tobacco Free for over 4 years.
Then I whip out my Mod.

Congratulations on quitting and welcome to the ECF family.

My :2c::

Insurance companies know a lot about vaping. Unfortunately, it's all wrong and centered on ANTZ rhetoric that nicotine equals smoking no matter the source; vaping, gum, patches - anything with nicotine in it will usually qualify people as smokers, and the vast majority of the insurance companies and HR talking heads couldn't care less that it has and will continue to improve your health.

Since you're already known to smoke by your husband's insurance carrier, you will most likely be required to take a cotinine screen when the next renewal period starts. Cotinine is an alkaloid created when your body metabolizes nicotine. In their minds, the presence of trace amounts of cotinine mean you are a smoker. End of story.

You may want to find out if this particular insurance carrier will require a cotinine screen and prepare for it by dropping to zero nicotine e-liquid about eight weeks prior to the screen.

Some here may argue that your system will rid itself of cotinine in much less time but depending on your metabolism and the type of screen (saliva or urine) they're using, it could take that long.

Two months prior to my renewal date last year, I began using zero nicotine e-liquid, invested in some high-end cotinine screening kits and tested myself weekly and it took eight weeks for me to test negative. Doing without the nicotine was difficult but it saved me from paying a "tobacco surcharge" of $150 per month, an annual savings of $1,800.

Your mileage may vary. Good luck.

the trick is to tell the truth.... but not ALL of it.... it would be true that you quit smoking... yes you can say you quit smoking.. leave it at that... dont offer the info on vaping, wait till they ask first, then mention you do on occasion ( because "on occasion" doesnt really have any distinct frequency) :)
