The ALA lost credibility with this statement:
"the association argues that DiCaprio's behavior exposes those around him to cancer"

Conflicted.
I think it's good to have celebrities and other media figures on our side, but the behavior of vaping in close quarters around others who aren't consenting to being stuck with your steam isn't something I condone. Furthermore, that is exactly the behavior that has him "on blast," which is not exactly good for the community, either.
There aren't enough people (yet) who understand that the reaction from the American Lung Association is some combination of uninformed, attention-seeking, political, and fear-mongering. At present, there are too many who will take it at face value. That is not what we need.
Maybe for us, but we don't exist in a bubble. Stating the obvious, but it is never helpful when an organization in relatively good public standing makes crazy statements that work to turn folks against us.
Well said. I have been seeing shame and guilt creeping its way into the vaping community for awhile now. Usually I try to speak against it, lately I've been tired though. I'm getting tired of trying to convince vapers that vaping really isn't smoking.I haven't read anything that says he was vaping without permission or those near him had a problem there is a lack of information that rules out slamming him for vaping. As for the ALA they are a joke one of many organisations that exist to pursue the agenda of the pharmaceutical company's and to hell with lung health and do not expect any real science to come from them it doesn't fit the agenda. You know what I can understand ..... media getting itself in a hissy fit over this most people are knee jerk reactionaries looking for the latest thing to jump on but the response from some members on vaping forums has disgusted me. This is a high profile person out vaping in public and doing it openly something the vape community should be applauding and demanding more instead we have the shame brigade who claim to be vapers but tell everyone we shouldn't do it in public. I vape everywhere I go that doesn't specifically not allow it, I am open to everyone to come and talk to make about it and I'm proud that not only am I smoke free but have been for over three years because of vaping and I'm not changing just become some people get a bug up their backside. I'm all for being courteous when out and about and respecting other people but thats a two way street and I'm not skulking in a corner like some junkie because a few have a lower IQ then they have fingers.
Perhaps the ALA should be "put on blast" for not understanding that vaping does not cause cancer.

Or it's asking to spark a conversation.Just for the record, I'm not a shamer. I agree that we should we should vape anywhere that vaping isn't banned specifically (I do it too) but to deliberately vape in a crowded space where smoking is banned is just asking for trouble right now while we are under so much fire from the CDC and FDA IMHO.

IMO this could potentially be a major event. Imagine if Leo is asked onto the talk show circuit to discuss his actions, if he's got the right info to share, perhaps he could actually make a difference. Maybe the ALA will actually be called to task for attacking something that has the potential to replace smoking.
